Police in Imo State have arrested two suspects in connection with the gruesome killing of a female nursing student in Obowo Local Government Area of the state.

The victim, identified as Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, was reportedly found dead in her off-campus apartment after she was allegedly raped and beheaded by her attackers. The incident, which occurred in the Umulogho community, sparked outrage among residents, students, and youth groups in the area.

According to reports, security operatives launched an investigation immediately after the discovery of the victim’s body. Authorities later confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to the crime, with one of them reportedly identified as a vulcaniser in the community.

Sources familiar with the investigation alleged that the suspects confessed during interrogation that they attacked the student after she recognised them. The victim was reportedly assaulted before being killed in an attempt to cover up the crime.

The Imo State Police Command said investigations are ongoing to uncover all those involved and ensure justice is served. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye assured residents that the command is committed to prosecuting the suspects and restoring calm in the community.

The tragic incident has triggered widespread condemnation across social media, with many Nigerians demanding stricter security measures around student hostels and tougher punishment for perpetrators of gender-based violence. Community leaders and youth groups in Obowo have also called for speedy prosecution of the suspects.

The late Wendy Achumba, who hailed from Abia State, was said to have completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training before her death.
