Authorities confirm suspect killed after shooting at White House checkpoint
A suspect has been shot dead after opening fire on U.S. Secret Service officers near a White House security checkpoint in Washington, D.C., officials confirmed.
According to the Secret Service, the incident occurred on Saturday evening near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, just outside the White House perimeter. The suspect allegedly approached the checkpoint, pulled a firearm from a bag, and began shooting at officers.

Security personnel returned fire, striking the suspect. He was later taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A bystander was also injured during the exchange of gunfire, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether the person was hit by the suspect’s initial shots or by return fire from law enforcement.

The White House was placed on brief lockdown during the incident, while journalists and staff in the vicinity reported hearing multiple gunshots. No Secret Service personnel were injured.
Officials say the FBI is assisting in the investigation, and the motive behind the shooting remains under review.
At the time of the incident, the White House was occupied, but no protectees were harmed, and operations were not disrupted.

The shooting has raised renewed concerns about security around the U.S. presidential residence, coming just weeks after other reported security-related incidents in the area.
