At Least Nine Dead After Severe Flooding in Chongqing, China
At least nine people have been confirmed dead following severe flooding in Chongqing, southwest China, after days of intense rainfall triggered landslides and submerged large parts of the region, according to state media reports.
Authorities said the heavy downpours caused rivers to overflow, inundating homes, roads, and farmlands, while also disrupting transportation and power supply in several districts. Emergency response teams have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations, with concerns that more victims may still be unaccounted for.
China’s state broadcaster, CCTV, reported that thousands of residents have been evacuated from high-risk areas as floodwaters continued to rise in some communities. Temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced families, while relief supplies are being distributed to affected populations.

Local authorities warned that the situation remains volatile, as weather forecasts predict continued rainfall in the coming days, raising fears of further flooding and landslides in already saturated areas.
China has in recent years faced increasingly severe weather patterns, including extreme rainfall and flooding, which experts often link to climate change and rapid urbanization.
Officials say efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy, including clearing debris, repairing damaged infrastructure, and ensuring access to clean water and medical care for affected residents.
