Tinubu Receives Madagascar’s President Randrianirina in Historic First State Visit to Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday received Madagascar’s leader, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for high-level closed-door talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between both African nations.
Randrianirina’s visit marks a significant diplomatic milestone, as it is the first recorded state visit to Nigeria by a sitting Malagasy Head of State since diplomatic relations between the two countries were established.
The Madagascar leader arrived at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa as part of a multi-country diplomatic tour he has undertaken since assuming office in October following a political transition that led to the departure of former President Andry Rajoelina.
Although details of the meeting were not immediately disclosed, discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, maritime security, regional integration, and broader African development initiatives.
The visit is seen as an opportunity for both countries to deepen diplomatic engagement and explore new avenues for economic and strategic collaboration.
Historically, interactions between Nigerian and Malagasy leaders have largely taken place on the sidelines of continental and international meetings rather than through direct bilateral state visits.
Political observers say the meeting underscores growing efforts by African leaders to expand intra-African partnerships and strengthen cooperation among member states of the African Union.
Randrianirina’s visit comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to enhance its diplomatic and economic footprint across the continent, while Madagascar continues efforts to consolidate its political transition and attract greater regional cooperation.
Further details of the discussions and any agreements reached are expected to be made public after the meeting between both leaders.
