The United States and Iran exchanged military strikes on Tuesday, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump accused Tehran of shooting down an American Army Apache helicopter near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. military said it carried out what it described as “self-defense” strikes against Iranian air-defense systems, radar installations and ground-control facilities following the helicopter incident. U.S. Central Command characterized the operation as a “proportional response” to what it called Iranian aggression.

President Trump said Iran was responsible for bringing down the AH-64 Apache helicopter while it was on patrol near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil-shipping routes. He insisted that the United States was compelled to respond to the attack. Both crew members survived and were rescued in a complex operation involving an unmanned naval vessel.

Iran, however, disputed the U.S. account of events. Iranian officials suggested the incident may have been accidental and warned that foreign military forces operating close to Iranian territory faced significant risks. Tehran nevertheless condemned the U.S. strikes and vowed retaliation.

Following the American operation, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting locations linked to U.S. forces in the region. Reports indicated that sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan were among the targets, while air-defense systems in some countries were activated in response.

The latest exchange has raised fears of a broader confrontation in the Middle East and has cast doubt on efforts to revive diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran. Analysts warn that continued hostilities could threaten stability in the Gulf region and disrupt global energy markets due to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite authorizing the strikes, Trump has maintained that he remains open to a diplomatic resolution and is not seeking a wider war with Iran. However, the latest military actions have significantly increased tensions between the two longtime adversaries.
