Tinubu Vows No Deals With Terrorists as Retired General Dies in Captivity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held by terrorists after being abducted in Katsina State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President described the incident as tragic and extended his condolences to the deceased officer’s family, the Katsina State Government, and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
General Abubakar, who had retired from military service after a distinguished career, was reportedly travelling to his hometown when he was captured by armed criminals. His wife remains in captivity.
President Tinubu expressed particular concern for the retired general’s wife and other victims still being held by kidnappers, assuring that the government would continue efforts to secure their freedom.
The President, however, maintained a hardline stance against negotiating with terrorists, declaring that the Federal Government would not yield to demands for the release of detained terror suspects in exchange for hostages.
“While the terrorists have done their worst, the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies,” the statement quoted the President as saying.
Reaffirming his administration’s determination to defeat insecurity, Tinubu referenced his Democracy Day address, where he warned bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terrorism to surrender or face the full force of the law.
“Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” he said.
The President stressed that the death of General Abubakar should strengthen the nation’s resolve to confront terrorism and insurgency without compromise.
According to him, terrorists and insurgents remain enemies of the state and should be dealt with decisively rather than engaged through negotiations.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united in the fight against insecurity, expressing confidence that the country would ultimately overcome terrorism and emerge stronger.
“General Abubakar’s death should serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents. We must continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our nation and never spare them,” he added.
The late General Abubakar’s death has renewed concerns over the persistent threat of kidnapping and terrorism in parts of northern Nigeria, despite ongoing military operations against armed groups.
