World Blood Donor Day: Remi Tinubu Hails Donors as ‘Heroes of Life,’ Urges More Nigerians to Give Blood

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has commended blood donors across the country for their life-saving contributions, describing them as “heroes of life” whose acts of generosity continue to give hope to millions of people.

In a message marking the 2026 World Blood Donor Day, the First Lady called on more Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace voluntary blood donation to help strengthen the nation’s healthcare system and ensure a steady supply of safe blood.

The annual observance, celebrated on June 14, carries the theme, “Honoring the Heroes of Life.”

Mrs. Tinubu said blood donors play a critical role in saving lives, especially for patients battling critical illnesses and those requiring urgent blood transfusions.

“On this World Blood Donor Day 2026, I celebrate the millions of blood donors around the world and here at home, whose selfless acts continue to save lives every day,” she said.

She noted that a safe and reliable blood supply remains essential to building an effective and resilient healthcare system, stressing that voluntary donors make a direct contribution to national health outcomes.

According to her, blood donation is not only an act of compassion but also a vital service that strengthens healthcare delivery and supports communities across the country.

“Blood donors are true heroes. Through a simple act of compassion, they give hope to millions of people facing critical illnesses and in urgent need of life-saving transfusions,” she stated.

The First Lady further urged Nigerians to make blood donation a regular practice, emphasizing that increased participation would help ensure the availability of safe blood whenever and wherever it is needed.

“I encourage more Nigerians, especially our young people, to embrace voluntary blood donation and help ensure that safe blood is available at all times,” she added.

She concluded by extending goodwill to blood donors worldwide and wishing Nigerians a happy World Blood Donor Day celebration.
