The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has commended Nigerian music star Davido for using his international platform to draw attention to the plight of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

Obi’s commendation followed Davido’s appearance at a FIFA World Cup countdown event, where the award-winning Afrobeats singer wore a customised black leather jacket bearing the names of schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped by gunmen from Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The jacket carried the inscription, “Bring Them Home,” alongside the names of 39 pupils and seven teachers reportedly abducted during the attack, a gesture that attracted attention from audiences across the globe.

Reacting in a statement shared on his social media platforms on Monday, Obi described Davido’s action as a patriotic effort that transcended entertainment and brought global focus to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

He argued that Nigeria’s absence from the FIFA World Cup was not due to a shortage of talent but a failure of political leadership to create an environment where young people could thrive and realise their potential.

According to Obi, the tournament showcased the immense talents of Nigerians, both through the performances of Nigerian artistes and the presence of Nigerians representing other countries on the football field.

He said these developments should serve as a wake-up call for political leaders to invest more in youth development and create opportunities that enable young Nigerians to excel.

Obi particularly praised Davido for using a global stage to advocate for victims of insecurity, noting that the singer’s decision to highlight the plight of the abducted schoolchildren demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility.

“Davido’s impactful gesture in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges warrants commendation,” Obi said.

He added that the country’s persistent insecurity deserved international attention, especially in light of growing concerns over the government’s capacity to effectively address the crisis.

The former presidential candidate, however, expressed optimism that Nigeria could overcome its challenges with purposeful leadership and renewed commitment to addressing insecurity and creating opportunities for its citizens.

The abduction of the pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area has continued to generate national concern, with calls mounting for authorities to intensify efforts toward securing their safe release.
