Petition Accuses Senior EFCC Officer Of Corruption, Abuse Of Office

A senior managerial officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), reportedly an Assistant Commander of the Commission, has been accused of corruption, abuse of office, obstruction of justice and unexplained wealth.

The allegations are contained in a six-page petition submitted to the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, on July 9, 2026, by the Network for Justice Association of Nigeria (NJAN), according to PRNigeria.

The petition comes amid increased scrutiny of alleged misconduct within the anti-graft agency, including a separate investigation involving a sectional head over an alleged $400,000 corruption case.

Olukoyede has repeatedly emphasised the need for internal cleansing within the Commission, while the EFCC has sanctioned and dismissed personnel found culpable of fraud, misconduct and other breaches.

According to the petition, the officer, who is said to be close to the Commission’s leadership, earns a monthly remuneration reportedly ranging between N800,000 and N900,000.

NJAN President, Adedeji Sunday Ajala, signed the petition, which was also copied to the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

The organisation listed 21 allegations against the officer, including claims concerning his alleged relationships with influential political and business figures whose interests could potentially intersect with his official responsibilities.

One of the allegations involved a prominent businessman from the South-East, who NJAN claimed allegedly engaged the officer to influence an EFCC case. The petition alleged that the officer visited the businessman’s Abuja residence on June 1, 2026, where an undisclosed amount in United States dollars was allegedly paid to suppress the matter.

The petition also alleged that the officer maintained contacts with political figures in northern Nigeria, including individuals reportedly connected to cases under his supervision.

NJAN expressed concern that, if established, the alleged relationships and conduct could undermine the credibility of the EFCC, erode public confidence in its anti-corruption operations and discourage officers carrying out their duties professionally.

The organisation therefore urged Olukoyede to order an independent and comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

It also called for the preservation of relevant documentary and electronic evidence, protection of potential witnesses and appropriate sanctions if any wrongdoing is established.

“A thorough investigation and decisive action will reinforce public confidence in the Commission’s commitment to accountability and send a clear message that no officer, regardless of rank or influence, is above the law,” the petition stated.

The allegations remain claims contained in the petition and would require investigation and verification by the appropriate authorities before any conclusion can be reached on the officer’s culpability.
