Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned what he described as “horrific attacks” after a fresh wave of Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least 12 civilians and wounded 40 others across several regions of Ukraine, intensifying the conflict despite ongoing international calls for peace.

The coordinated overnight assault targeted multiple cities, including Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kharkiv, damaging residential buildings, civilian infrastructure and public transport. Ukrainian emergency services spent hours searching through debris and rescuing survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.

The city of Dnipro suffered the heaviest losses after a Russian missile struck a residential area, killing six people and injuring 29 others. Images released by emergency services showed apartment blocks with shattered windows, collapsed walls and rescue workers carrying victims to waiting ambulances.

Officials said several buildings caught fire following the explosion, while dozens of residents were evacuated as firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the flames.

In the Zaporizhzhia region, a Russian drone struck a civilian passenger minibus, killing three people and injuring several others. Authorities described the attack as one of the most disturbing incidents of the day because it directly targeted civilians travelling along a public road.

Additional drone strikes in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions claimed more lives and left several people injured while damaging homes and essential infrastructure.

Reacting to the attacks, President Zelenskyy accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians and renewed his appeal for additional air defence systems from Ukraine’s Western allies.

He said the latest strikes demonstrated the urgent need for more advanced missile defence capabilities, particularly against ballistic missiles that continue to threaten Ukrainian cities.

Zelenskyy also thanked emergency responders and volunteers working at the attack sites while expressing condolences to the families of those killed.

The attacks also disrupted electricity supplies across eight Ukrainian regions, placing additional strain on the country’s power grid during an intense summer heatwave that has increased electricity demand.

Engineers were deployed to restore damaged transmission lines while local authorities opened emergency shelters for residents affected by the outages. Officials warned that repair work could take several days in the hardest-hit areas.

The latest Russian assault comes as Ukraine continues its own campaign of long-range drone strikes against military and energy targets inside Russia.

In recent days, Ukrainian drones have hit several Russian oil refineries and fuel depots, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to acknowledge fuel shortages in parts of the country while insisting Moscow will continue its military campaign.

Military analysts say both countries have increasingly relied on long-range drones and missile attacks, expanding the battlefield far beyond the front lines.

Despite renewed diplomatic efforts by several international mediators, prospects for a ceasefire remain uncertain.

Ukraine continues to call for stronger military support and enhanced air defence systems, while Russia maintains that it will continue offensive operations until its strategic objectives are achieved.

As rescue teams continue clearing rubble and searching for survivors, the latest attacks underscore the devastating human cost of a war that has entered its fifth year, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of the violence.
