Russia’s Defence Ministry has announced that its forces have captured the strategic eastern Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka, describing it as one of Ukraine’s most important defensive strongholds in the Donbas region. However, Ukrainian authorities have firmly rejected the claim, insisting that their forces continue to hold the city and are actively defending it.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russian troops had taken full control of Kostiantynivka after months of intense fighting. Moscow described the city as a major transportation hub and one of the principal fortified positions protecting Ukraine’s remaining strongholds in the Donetsk region.

Russian officials said the capture would allow their forces to continue offensive operations toward other key cities in eastern Ukraine, including Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, both regarded as vital to Ukraine’s defence of the Donbas. President Putin also argued that the advance strengthens Russia’s efforts to establish expanded security zones along parts of the border.

Ukraine, however, has strongly disputed Russia’s announcement. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the claim as false, while Ukraine’s General Staff stated that defensive operations remain underway in and around Kostiantynivka. Military officials said Ukrainian troops continue to resist Russian assaults and retain control of the strategically important city.

Independent verification of either side’s claims has not been possible because of ongoing fighting in the area. Military analysts note that Kostiantynivka has been one of the most fiercely contested cities in eastern Ukraine for months, with both Russian and Ukrainian forces suffering heavy casualties during repeated offensives and counterattacks.

The city forms part of a network of heavily fortified urban centres that includes Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. If Russia were ultimately to secure full control of Kostiantynivka, analysts say it could provide Moscow with a staging ground for further advances deeper into Ukrainian-held territory in Donetsk Oblast.

The announcement comes as fighting continues across multiple fronts. Ukraine has intensified long-range drone strikes against targets inside Russia, including attacks on energy infrastructure and military facilities around Saint Petersburg, while Russia has continued missile, drone and artillery attacks across Ukraine. The conflict remains at a critical stage, with both sides seeking battlefield gains amid stalled diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Despite renewed international calls for negotiations, there has been little progress toward a ceasefire. Ukrainian officials continue to reject Russian territorial claims, while Moscow insists its military operations will continue until its objectives are achieved. As a result, Kostiantynivka has become the latest flashpoint in a conflict that has entered its fifth year with no immediate resolution in sight.
