Hollywood superhero film Supergirl has emerged as the highest-grossing movie in Nigerian cinemas for the week of June 26 to July 2, raking in N66.9 million in ticket sales during its opening week.

The figures, released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, Comscore and the National Film and Video Censors Board, show the film enjoyed a strong debut across 72 cinema locations nationwide.

Distributed by Warner Bros., Supergirl generated N44.88 million during its opening weekend, with Saturday recording the highest single-day earnings of N16.8 million.

The movie maintained a steady performance throughout the week, earning N4.59 million on Monday, another N4.59 million on Tuesday, N4.05 million on Wednesday, and N4.69 million on Thursday. Its seven-day box office earnings stood at N62.79 million, while its cumulative gross reached N66.9 million.

Industry analysts say the impressive opening underscores the continued popularity of major Hollywood franchise films among Nigerian audiences, despite growing competition from Nollywood productions and other international releases.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. The cast also features Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet and Jason Momoa.

The 2026 release is the second installment in the rebooted DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Inspired by the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film follows Kara Zor-El on a revenge-driven journey across the galaxy.

Produced on an estimated budget of between $170 million and $186 million, the movie represents a major investment by Warner Bros. in rebuilding its superhero franchise.

The strong opening follows the success of Superman, which grossed N133.7 million during its debut weekend in Nigeria before earning N338.9 million within three weeks, making it one of the country’s highest-grossing films of 2025.

With Supergirl off to a promising start, industry observers expect the film to continue drawing audiences as Warner Bros. expands its new DC Universe franchise in cinemas.
