The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers, demoted 10 others and sanctioned 21 additional officers for various acts of misconduct, reaffirming its resolve to strengthen discipline and professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force.

The decisions were taken during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu, the PSC said the four officers were dismissed after being found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts unbecoming of public officers.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the Commission approved the reduction in rank of 10 officers. Three Superintendents of Police (SPs) were demoted to Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), two DSPs were reduced to Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), while five ASPs were demoted to the rank of Inspector.

The Commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest.

Other sanctions included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five officers, warning letters for three officers and a letter of advice to one officer.

The PSC, however, exonerated seven officers after investigations found no evidence of wrongdoing against them.

Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, said the Board would continue to deal decisively with officers found wanting while rewarding those who demonstrate professionalism and dedication to duty.

“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers. The Commission will continue to uphold discipline in the Force and match every act of misconduct with appropriate disciplinary action,” he said.
