Two Dead, Five Injured in Ukrainian Attacks on Crimea and Southern Russia, Authorities Say

At least two people were killed and five others injured in a series of overnight Ukrainian drone and missile attacks targeting Russian-controlled Crimea and parts of southern Russia, according to Russian authorities, as cross-border strikes continue to intensify in the more than four-year-old war.

Russian-installed officials in Crimea said the attacks struck several locations across the peninsula, causing civilian casualties and damage to residential buildings and infrastructure. Local authorities reported that emergency services were deployed to affected areas to extinguish fires, assist residents and assess the extent of the destruction. They added that air defence systems intercepted a number of incoming drones, although some were able to reach their targets.

Officials in southern Russian regions also reported injuries and damage from the overnight attacks, saying drones targeted infrastructure and populated areas near the border. Governors of the affected regions said debris from intercepted drones and direct impacts caused damage to homes and public facilities, while investigators were working to determine the full extent of the attacks.

The latest strikes come as Ukraine has stepped up long-range drone operations aimed at disrupting Russian military logistics, fuel depots, transport hubs and industrial facilities supporting Moscow’s war effort. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have claimed responsibility for attacks on warehouses, oil facilities and military infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, while Russia says many of the attacks have also affected civilian areas.

The overnight attacks were followed by renewed Russian military operations against Ukraine. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces carried out strikes on Ukrainian ports in Odesa and Chornomorsk, claiming to have targeted military infrastructure, cargo vessels and fuel storage facilities used to support Ukraine’s armed forces. Ukraine has not confirmed the Russian claims, and Reuters said it could not independently verify battlefield reports from either side.

The exchange of attacks highlights the increasingly cross-border nature of the conflict, with both sides expanding the range and frequency of drone and missile operations. Ukraine says its strikes are directed at military and logistical targets that support Russia’s invasion, while Moscow accuses Kyiv of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas. Both countries deny intentionally attacking civilians.

Military analysts say Ukraine’s expanding drone campaign is intended to stretch Russian air defences, disrupt supply chains and increase pressure on Moscow far from the front lines. At the same time, Russia has continued large-scale missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, contributing to rising civilian casualties and extensive damage on both sides of the conflict.

The latest exchange underscores the continuing escalation of the war, with no immediate signs of a diplomatic breakthrough despite renewed international efforts to encourage negotiations. As both sides intensify long-range strikes, civilians in border regions and occupied territories remain increasingly vulnerable to the expanding conflict.
