Hafidh Ameir Hassan, Husband of Tanzania’s President, Dies at 77

Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death, saying Ameir died at about 8 a.m. local time on September 7 at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Funeral arrangements were subsequently announced to be underway in the president’s home region.

Ameir became Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman when Samia Suluhu Hassan became president in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli. He generally maintained a relatively low public profile compared with his wife.

News of his death prompted condolences from leaders across East Africa and beyond.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sorrow over the death and sent condolences to President Samia, her family and the Tanzanian people. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also extended condolences to the Tanzanian president and the country.

Other regional leaders and officials have joined the expressions of sympathy as Tanzania prepares to bury the First Gentleman.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan was known for maintaining a relatively private life despite being married to one of Africa’s most prominent political figures.

Reports indicate that he and President Samia had four children and had been married since 1978. He was also associated with agricultural activities and was remembered by colleagues and community leaders for his contributions to the sector.

His death comes as President Samia begins another term in office after winning Tanzania’s 2025 presidential election.

The president has yet to make a detailed public statement on the loss, while funeral preparations continue in Zanzibar.

For Tanzania, the death marks the loss of a figure who occupied a unique place in the country’s recent political history as its first First Gentleman.
