US Delivers Military Equipment to Nigerian Air Force as Security Partnership Deepens

The United States has delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force as Washington and Abuja strengthen their defence and security partnership, particularly in the fight against terrorism in the region.

The equipment was transported to Nigeria by a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III and delivered under a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement between the United States and Nigeria. The delivery took place on September 6, according to reports citing the US military.

The US Department of Defense’s visual information service, DVIDS, confirmed that a US Air Force C-17 delivered equipment to the Nigerian Air Force in September 2026.

The delivery is part of broader American efforts to support Nigeria’s military capabilities and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in addressing terrorism and other security threats across West Africa.

Reports said the aircraft delivered the equipment to Nigerian Air Force facilities in Lagos and Kainji.

The Foreign Military Sales programme is a US government mechanism through which American defence equipment, services and training are provided to foreign partners. The latest delivery therefore represents more than a single shipment, as it forms part of an established defence relationship between Washington and Abuja.

Nigeria has continued to battle insurgency and terrorism, particularly in the Northeast, where Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province remain major security threats.

The Nigerian military has also been conducting operations against armed groups and terrorists in other parts of the country, making access to modern equipment and logistical support an important component of its counter-terrorism strategy.

The US has increasingly described Nigeria as an important security partner in Africa, while military cooperation between both countries has included training, intelligence cooperation and defence equipment.

The latest delivery comes amid renewed international attention on Nigeria’s security situation and the need for stronger regional cooperation against terrorist organisations operating across borders.

For Washington, supporting Nigeria also fits into its broader objective of strengthening security partnerships with African countries while improving their ability to respond to extremist threats.

The arrival of the C-17 provides a highly visible demonstration of the military relationship between the two countries.

The aircraft is a strategic military transport platform capable of carrying troops, vehicles and large quantities of equipment over long distances, making it suitable for major military logistics operations.

Nigerian and US officials have continued to emphasise the importance of bilateral cooperation in confronting terrorism and improving regional security.

The latest equipment transfer is expected to further enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s operational capacity as the country continues its campaign against terrorism and other armed groups.
