2027 Election Will Test Nigeria’s Democratic Maturity, Jonathan Says
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the 2027 general election will provide a major test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to prioritise peace, unity and justice.
Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary of independence.
The former President urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to the unity of the country as preparations for the 2027 electoral season gather momentum.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 66-year journey, Jonathan acknowledged the challenges the country had faced since independence but said Nigerians had continued to overcome them through resilience.
He urged citizens to remain hopeful and united while contributing to the development of the country.
Jonathan also said Nigeria had significant opportunities ahead if its diversity and abundant human and natural resources were effectively harnessed for sustainable development.
He particularly encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous in working towards a country capable of providing a prosperous future for generations to come.
According to him, achieving such a future would require greater responsibility from leaders at all levels.
He called on political and public office holders to demonstrate stronger patriotism and address the country’s social and economic challenges through sacrifice, good governance, accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” Jonathan said.
He further urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and work collectively towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable nation.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
