Player-Union in Nigeria: Spanish Model Vs. Nigerian Model โ Could Spain Offer A Way forward?
By Paul Lucky Okoku
Who should determine which organisation represents professional footballers?
One international example offers a simple answer:
In May 2026, players across all 42 dressing rooms in Spainโs First and Second Divisions voted on which union should represent them in negotiations for their next collective agreement. AFE received 856 votes, or 93.14% of valid votes cast. Under Spainโs Sports Law, a union needed at least 10% of valid votes to qualify for the negotiating table.
The importance of that example is not the identity of the winning union.
It is the process.
For Nigeria, that raises a practical question: could a similar player-led process offer a way forward?
The Spanish process placed active footballers at the centre of domestic collective-bargaining representation.
Professional players are employees. Their contracts, salaries, injuries, insurance, transfers and working conditions affect their careers and families.
Former players can contribute experience, leadership and institutional knowledge. But when an organisation seeks to represent current professionals in employment matters, the mandate is clearer when active players participate in choosing it.
Spain provided a defined mechanism:
One distinction matters. AFE had already voted in February 2026 to leave FIFPRO and participate in creating a new international playersโ organisation. Spain is cited here for its domestic voting mechanism, not as an example of a route into FIFPRO.

Ghana provides a different lesson.
The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana, PFAG, worked with the Ghana Football Association on a standard player contract that took effect from the 2025/26 season across the Ghana Premier League, Womenโs Premier League and Division One League.
The agreement addresses contract duration, compensation and other employment obligations, with the objective of creating a more consistent framework and reducing disputes.
Ghana therefore shifts the discussion from ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ๐๐ซ to ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ.
A seat at the table has limited value if the person occupying it does not know what the players want carried into the room.
Before negotiations begin, players should be able to identify the priorities they want addressed: salaries, travel, accommodation, medical care, insurance, workload, recovery and dispute resolution.
Captains, vice-captains and other representatives chosen by teammates could help gather those concerns across professional clubs.
Representation should travel in both directions:
An informed vote requires informed players.
Footballers should understand the contracts they sign, how termination clauses work, where disputes are filed, what protections exist, and what options remain when a decision is ignored.
FIFPRO advises footballers with contractual problems to seek help through their national player association and, where necessary, through the wider international player-union structure.
That education allows players to assess organisations on substance rather than reputation or personalities.
Before any vote, organisations seeking to represent professional footballers could be invited to present their programmes under the same rules.
Players should be able to ask:

And if international affiliation is an objective:
That allows footballers to compare

On June 10, 2026, FIFA and FIFPRO signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a Global Social Dialogue Platform. FIFA recognised FIFPRO as the global representative body for professional football players and as the social partner representing players as employees.
The platform includes workstreams on the transfer system, domestic social dialogue, player welfare, and occupational safety and health.
For Nigerian footballers, the relevant question is not simply whether an organisation seeks international recognition. It is what practical value that pathway could provide and how the organisation intends to reach it.
FIFPRO and its member unions provide contract guidance, specialist legal support and international representation.

The case of Bolivian footballer Cristian Arano Ruiz illustrates the distinction between winning a case and receiving the remedy.
Arano obtained a favourable Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling in May 2025, but the debt remained unpaid. FIFPRO and Boliviaโs player union, FABOL, pursued enforcement through the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
In November 2025, FIFA sanctioned the Bolivian Football Federation for failing to enforce the ruling and gave it 30 days to resolve the matter. When compliance still did not follow, FIFA withheld 20% of the federationโs FIFA Forward Programme payment. Club Blooming ultimately settled the debt in full.
The lesson is concise:
After education, consultation and presentations, eligible professional footballers could vote through an independently supervised and confidential process.
Nigeria would have to establish its own rules on eligibility, thresholds, supervision, appeals and whether representation is exclusive or shared.
The international examples do not dictate a Nigerian outcome.
Spain demonstrates a voting mechanism for establishing a domestic bargaining mandate.
Ghana demonstrates how organised representation can produce practical employment protections.
FIFPRO demonstrates the value of wider legal and institutional support.
Together, they suggest
Educate the players.
Listen to the dressing rooms.
Let qualified organisations explain what they will deliver.
Ask what happens when contracts are breached or judgments are not enforced.
Ask what international pathway they can realistically provide.
Then let the active professional footballers decide who should represent them.
So when the question becomes who should speak for the player, the playerโs voice should not be the last voice heard.
