This is not about claiming that former footballers know everything.

We do not.

It is not a declaration that every former international player should automatically become a football administrator.

They should not.

And it is not a competition with lawyers, accountants, businesspeople, politicians, academics or career administrators.

It is simpler:

For decades, Nigerians knew many former internationals through one window: football.

They knew the jerseys, tackles, goals, victories and disappointments.

What many did not see was what happened when the boots came off.

This project is entirely voluntary and independently undertaken on my personal time.

None of the former players whose records appear in this series asked me to include them. I have not contacted them for endorsement, approval or participation, and they have not contacted me asking to be considered.

I saw a gap and decided to examine publicly available professional, academic, institutional and football records.

Part of this work has involved studying how the Nigeria Football Federation has actually been structured and operated in practice.

That means looking beyond titles and examining the organizational chart โ€” the visual map that shows departments, reporting lines, management hierarchy, who reports to whom, where authority sits and how responsibilities are distributed.

Under the administration led by Ibrahim Musa Gusau as NFF President and Dr. Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary, the Federation operated through an Executive Committee, Secretariat, standing committees, league structures and departmental responsibilities. Official NFF records show Sanusi presenting Secretariat activity and operational reports to the Executive Committee, while the President and Executive Committee exercised broader policy and governance functions.

Even during the 2026 transition, the NFF retained much of that underlying operational machinery. When Gusau, Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee resigned, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, previously Deputy General Secretary, was appointed interim General Secretary, while Dr. Ademola Olajire became interim Deputy General Secretary. The NFF also directed league administration to continue through Chief Operating Officers, showing that the institutional structure remained in place even while the top leadership changed.

That is the model I have been examining.

Not an imaginary NFF.

Not a theoretical football federation.

The NFF as it has actually been operating.

From a consulting perspective, the first question is not, โ€œWhat would I build from scratch?โ€

The first question is:

Who reports to whom?

Which departments exist?

Where does financial authority sit?

Where are decisions approved?

Which functions overlap?

Where are the control points?

Where are the gaps?

What should remain?

What should be strengthened?

What should be changed?

That is what an organizational chart helps reveal.

And that is what a consultant does.

You study the existing structure, understand the real operating model, identify weaknesses and duplication, examine controls and accountability, and then recommend what should be preserved, redesigned or strengthened.

That is the lens I have brought to this exercise.

Our continuing review of roughly the last three decades has produced a running public-record ledger of about โ‚ฆ52 billion in funds associated with major Nigerian football financial questions, investigations, audit issues and unresolved public scrutiny.

At the October 2, 2026 official CBN selling rate of โ‚ฆ1,329.16 to US$1, โ‚ฆ52 billion is approximately US$39.1 million. Gatekeepers News published the October 2 CBN buy-and-sell rates, listing the US-dollar selling rate at โ‚ฆ1,329.16.

It is an approximate running ledger of funds appearing across investigations, audit questions, parliamentary scrutiny and unresolved financial controversies we have been tracing.

On October 28, 2025, Premium Times reported that the House of Representatives had resolved to investigate more than US$25 million in FIFA and CAF development grants reportedly received by the NFF between 2015 and 2025. Lawmakers also referenced a 2016 FIFA audit query involving a US$1.1 million development grant, including approximately US$802,000 said to have lacked adequate supporting documentation. These were matters raised in parliamentary scrutiny, not findings of criminal guilt.

On August 21, 2026, Verita Post reported that an NFF response to a Freedom of Information request stated that documents concerning a โ‚ฆ12 billion Federal Government intervention fund were before the EFCC and ICPC as the agencies investigated its utilisation. The report also cautioned that the original intervention covered obligations across national teams in different sports and that the precise amount ultimately under direct NFF control had not been publicly reconciled.

The objective is not accusation.

On October 18, 2018, the EFCC arraigned three NFF officials before the FCT High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on five counts involving allegations of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and misappropriation of FIFA development funds. All three pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors alleged that he diverted approximately US$2.3 million. All three pleaded not guilty. Contemporary reporting described the proceeding as involving approximately US$9.5 million, plus the naira-denominated allegation involving Andekin.

The EFCC later sought to expand the case.

On April 30, 2019, the Commission applied to add ๐€๐ฆ๐š๐ฃ๐ฎ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ง๐ข๐œ๐ค, then NFF President, and ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐Œ๐จ๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ ๐’๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข, then NFF Secretary General, as co-defendants.

The separate Federal High Court matter, Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/93/2019, had been struck out in November 2019 after the Federal Government withdrew the charges.

But the original proceeding against Andekin, Zaka and Mamza continued after that ruling. Contemporary reporting stated that Justice Affen adjourned their trial to April 30, 2020.

And that is where the public-interest question becomes very simple:

The case generated headlines.

There were court appearances.

There were applications.

There were rulings.

Then the public trail became difficult to follow.

Justice Affen was subsequently elevated to the Court of Appeal.

What happened to Charge No. FCT/HC/CR/324/2018 after that?

Was the case reassigned?

Did another judge continue it?

Did the EFCC continue the prosecution against the original defendants?

Was it withdrawn?

Was it struck out?

Was there a final judgment?

Was anyone convicted?

Was anyone acquitted?

Was any money recovered?

Or does some part of the proceeding remain active?

A public corruption-case tracker currently lists the case as โ€œOn Trialโ€ and at the prosecution stage, but that database entry does not by itself establish the present official court status. That is precisely why documentary confirmation from the court and prosecuting authority matters.

These are not complicated questions.

They are questions an ordinary Nigerian should be able to ask when substantial sums of money and a major national institution are involved.

If it ended, the public should be able to know how.

If the defendants were cleared, the record should clear them.

If the prosecution continued, the record should show where it went.

If the matter remains pending, Nigerians should know that too.

That is why we have written seeking documentary clarification of the case and have also directed an open inquiry to the EFCC.

If ordinary correspondence does not produce the record, the next lawful avenue is Nigeriaโ€™s Freedom of Information Act 2011.

Nearly eight years after the original 2018 proceedings began, the objective is not to manufacture guilt.

It is to establish resolution.

๐€๐๐ƒ ๐–๐‡๐Ž ๐‡๐€๐’ ๐‹๐„๐ƒ?

Using the NFFโ€™s long-stated 1945 founding date, the period from 1945 through 2026 spans 81 years. Historical NFA material has traditionally used 1945 as the federationโ€™s formation date, although more recent archival research has argued for an earlier origin.

On July 30, 2022, The Guardian Nigeria reported: โ€œNo ex-international has occupied the position since its inception.โ€ The article appeared during coverage of the approaching NFF presidential election and identified several former internationals seeking the presidency.

The subsequent 2022 election was won by Ibrahim Musa Gusau, a football administrator. Gusau remained president until his resignation on August 27, 2026.

On that conventional 1945-to-2026 measure, the historical record translates to:

The significance is not that a former international would automatically perform better.

It establishes something narrower:

The same pattern remains when the lens is narrowed to roughly the last three decades: successive administrators occupied the presidency, but not a former Nigeria international.

And that matters when the same broad period contains substantial financial questions, investigations, parliamentary inquiries and demands for documentary closure.

The โ‚ฆ52 billion running public-record ledger reflects financial questions that have triggered parliamentary scrutiny, anti-corruption investigations, audit queries and continuing demands for documentary closure.

So when someone says:

โ€œFormer footballers cannot run the NFF.โ€

The reasonable question is:

They have not occupied the presidency.

They have not controlled the top office whose performance is being debated.

Yet the same leadership era has produced repeated financial controversies, investigations and unresolved accountability questions.

That is the point.

Former Nigeria internationals have not occupied the presidency.

They have not controlled the top office whose historical performance is being debated.

That is why this exercise puts qualified former playersโ€™ records on the table.

Not to say they are automatically better.

Not to say everybody else is unqualified.

But to ask a legitimate question:

If serious governance and financial questions remain unresolved, why should qualified people with different professional experience be excluded from consideration before their records are even examined?

I do not know what final selection process will be used.

That is why this work is being done now:

The purpose is not to plead for appointments.

It is to put documented records on the table so decision-makers and the reading public can examine them.

The publicly available record alone should be enough to get qualified people through the door for serious consideration and interview.

And that is where the next stage begins.

An interview allows decision-makers to examine what may not be visible in the public record: the depth of their management experience, the scale of teams they have led, budgets they have controlled, systems they have built, crises they have handled, projects they have delivered, institutions they have served and lessons they have accumulated over decades.

Some of that experience may never have appeared in a newspaper, biography, public profile or football record.

The interview should test the rest.

Then let the full record determine who merits further consideration.

The argument is not:

โ€œGive former players the NFF because they played football.โ€

Examine everybody.

Education. Professional experience. People management. Financial responsibility. Integrity. Governance.

What have they managed?

What have they built?

What evidence exists of accountability?

Then add football knowledge.

Football experience should never substitute for competence.

But when professional competence, leadership experience and institutional responsibility are already present, genuine football knowledge becomes an additional asset.
