22-Year-Old British National Arrested Over RAF Fairford Incident
British police have arrested a 22-year-old British man in London as part of an investigation into a security incident near RAF Fairford, bringing the number of people detained in connection with the case to seven.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in Westminster on Tuesday, October 6, on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police also carried out a search at a property in the area.
The latest arrest is linked to an incident on September 27, when five British men in their 20s were arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire after reports of suspicious activity involving three vans. A sixth suspect, a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national, was arrested in London on October 1.
All six of those previously arrested have since been released on police bail while the investigation continues. Police have not announced charges against any of the suspects.
The September incident triggered a major security operation around the airbase, with armed police and bomb-disposal experts deployed and nearby residents temporarily evacuated. Police found petrol in the vehicles but no explosive devices, according to reports. The circumstances and purpose of the activity remain under investigation.
RAF Fairford is a US-run military facility in Gloucestershire that has been used to accommodate American military aircraft. The base had hosted B-1 bombers before the United States withdrew all 12 aircraft from the facility over security concerns.
US officials have privately linked the security concerns to a possible Iranian drone threat, although specific intelligence has not been publicly disclosed. President Donald Trump said the bombers were moved because of threats, while the Pentagon cited operational security when confirming their return to the United States.
British authorities have also been examining the possibility of foreign-state involvement in the investigation. Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously said there were strong indications of Iranian involvement, but Iran has denied any connection with the incident.
The Iranian embassy in London has rejected what it described as speculation about Iranian involvement. British officials have stressed that the investigation remains active and that several possible explanations are being examined.
The latest arrest does not mean the suspect has been charged or that his involvement in the incident has been established. Counter Terrorism Policing said six men arrested earlier remain on police bail and that investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry.
Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Vicki Evans said the investigation remained “live” and that specialist teams were working to establish the motivation behind the events near RAF Fairford.
The investigation comes amid heightened security concerns in Britain over suspected hostile-state activity and follows the use of RAF Fairford by US forces during military operations against Iran earlier this year.
