Three Children, Teacher Killed in Oregon School Shooting by 16-Year-Old

Three children and a teacher have been killed after a 16-year-old opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, in the United States, prompting a major police response and renewed concern over gun violence in schools.

The shooting occurred on Thursday, October 15, at Silver Rail Elementary School. Police said the children killed were aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were also taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said officers received an emergency call at about 12:59 p.m. local time from a person who reported being shot at by someone carrying a long gun. Further emergency calls soon reported that a gunman had entered the school.

According to police, the suspect forced his way into the building by firing at locked doors. The school was placed under lockdown, and officers arrived within minutes.

Police said a community member who saw the teenager enter the school pursued him inside and shot him. The suspect was later confirmed dead. Authorities have not publicly identified him, and investigators have not established a motive or confirmed whether he had any connection to the school.

Following the attack, students and staff were evacuated and taken to a nearby church to reunite with their families. The Bend-La Pine Schools district cancelled classes, activities and sporting events for Friday as the community began responding to the tragedy.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed grief over the deaths and praised the community member who intervened, saying the person had helped prevent further loss of life. School officials described the incident as an unimaginable tragedy for pupils, families and staff.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are assisting local police with the investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, the suspect’s background and how he gained access to the school.

The shooting has renewed attention to the recurring problem of gun violence in American schools. However, investigators have yet to provide details about what motivated this particular attack.
