At least four people have been killed and four others remain missing after a powerful flash flood swept through a remote mountainous village in northern Vietnam, prompting an urgent search-and-rescue operation as authorities warn of continued heavy rainfall and the risk of more flooding.

The disaster struck early Saturday in Lai Chau Province, where torrential overnight rains triggered a sudden surge of water through a rural community, sweeping away homes, damaging infrastructure and leaving residents with little time to escape. State media reported that several people were caught in the rushing floodwaters while others were trapped as buildings collapsed or were carried away.

Emergency response teams, including soldiers, police officers and local volunteers, were deployed to the affected area shortly after the flood struck. Rescue workers have been combing riverbanks and debris fields in difficult conditions as they search for the four missing people. Authorities said the rugged terrain, swollen rivers and continuing rainfall have complicated rescue efforts and increased the danger of further flash floods and landslides.

Local officials have evacuated residents living in vulnerable areas while emergency shelters have been opened for families forced from their homes. Roads leading to the affected community have also suffered damage, slowing the delivery of relief supplies and heavy rescue equipment. Authorities are working to restore access and assess the full extent of the destruction.

Vietnam’s meteorological agency has warned that heavy rain is expected to continue across parts of the country’s northern mountainous region over the coming days, raising concerns that already saturated hillsides could give way and trigger additional flash floods or landslides. Residents have been advised to remain alert and avoid rivers, streams and unstable slopes.

The latest tragedy underscores Vietnam’s vulnerability to severe weather during the annual monsoon season. The country’s mountainous northern provinces are particularly susceptible to flash floods and landslides, which frequently occur after prolonged periods of intense rainfall. Experts say climate change is contributing to increasingly frequent and more intense extreme weather events across Southeast Asia, placing millions of people at greater risk.

Government authorities have pledged to continue search operations until all those missing are accounted for while providing emergency assistance to affected families. Damage assessments are also underway to determine the impact on homes, roads, farmland and public infrastructure as communities begin the difficult task of recovery.
