Isiaka Yakubu: The Forgotten Assistant Behind Nigeria’s 1983 World Cup Breakthrough
Behind Nigeriaโs historic football achievements stand men whose contributions deserve greater recognition.
One of them was
When the ๐๐๐๐ Flying Eagles became the first Nigerian national football team, at any level, to qualify for a FIFA World Cup tournament, ๐๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ณ๐ฎ๐ was our chief coach.
Beside him stood Yakubu, our assistant coachโa knowledgeable football technician, an exceptional communicator and a man I had the privilege of playing under in two different football environments.
His story deserves to be told.
Long before ๐๐๐ฑ๐ข๐๐จ ๐๐๐๐, Coach Yakubu had received professional football-coaching education in ๐๐ซ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฅ.
Former Nigerian international ๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ง ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข has documented Yakubuโs involvement with the senior national-team setup during the ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ฅ๐จฬ๐ซ๐ข๐ era, when he served as an interpreter for Brazilian physical trainer ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ.
By the time he joined Udemezue in preparing our Flying Eagles, Yakubu possessed valuable international exposure and professional coaching education.
But something else distinguished him.
He was articulate, expressive and remarkably fluent. His vocabulary seemed inexhaustible. Whether explaining a tactical principle or addressing players, he communicated with clarity, confidence and authority.
He had a commanding presence, and his words carried weight.
That was the ๐๐จ๐๐๐ก ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ค๐ ๐๐๐ค๐ฎ๐๐ฎ I knew.
Udemezue and Yakubu prepared young footballers for an assignment Nigeria had never successfully completed.
We were not established international superstars. We were ambitious young men learning to combine individual talent with discipline, technical understanding and collective responsibility.
One memory illustrates how our coaches worked together.
On ๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐, ๐๐๐๐, we travelled from ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐จ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐, ๐๐๐๐๐๐ง, where we had been preparing for our decisive World Cup qualifier against Guinea.
The following morning, ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐, at approximately ๐:๐๐ ๐.๐ฆ., before breakfast, Coach Yakubu took us through a light physical session.
Stretching.
Loosening up.
Gentle movements.
Nothing strenuous. The hard work had already been done.
Meanwhile, ๐๐จ๐๐๐ก ๐๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ณ๐ฎ๐ remained at our hotel, concentrating on the tactical and organizational preparations for the match.
Two coaches. Different responsibilities. One common objective.
There was no need for both men to perform the same assignment. Each understood his responsibility and trusted the other to deliver.
Later that day, we defeated ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐โ๐ at the ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐ญ๐๐๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ, ๐๐๐ ๐จ๐ฌ, securing our historic qualification for the FIFA World Youth Championship in Mexico.
That Saturday morning remains a practical lesson in football leadership.
Following my tribute to Coach Udemezue, several readers asked about the players who formed the ๐๐๐๐ Flying Eagles.
Their interest provides an opportunity to acknowledge our broader football family.
Our journey did not begin when we arrived in Mexico. It involved selection, preparation, demanding training sessions, qualification matches and the contributions of footballers who were not necessarily among the final 18 registered for the tournament.
All those contributions belong to the history of our generation.

Our military physical trainers contributed to our fitness and conditioning, while our physiotherapist and medical doctor cared for our physical well-being.
These men worked behind the scenes, often away from the attention given to players and coaches.

I invite former teammates and officials who remember our team doctorโs name to share it so we can complete the record.
Our late captain, ๐๐ฅ๐ข ๐๐๐ฃ๐, carried the responsibility of leading young footballers into unfamiliar international territory.
I had the privilege of serving alongside him as vice-captain.
Leadership demanded more than wearing an armband. It meant supporting our coaches, encouraging teammates, maintaining discipline and keeping the group united.
In ๐๐๐๐, our surviving teammates honoured Aliโs memory by supporting the education of his son, ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐๐๐ก๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐๐ฃ๐, through a scholarship initiative.
It reflected a bond that survived our playing careers and the passing of our captain.

Some travelled to Mexico. Others contributed during the qualifying and preparatory stages.
The final tournament roster identifies the footballers registered to represent Nigeria in Mexico. The wider history also recognizes those who contributed before the final squad was selected.

Coach Isiaka Yakubu has since passed away.
But what he helped accomplish remains.
He belonged to the technical leadership that took Nigeria to the ๐๐๐๐ FIFA World Youth Championship in Mexico, held from June 2โ19.
A Brazilian-educated football technician.
An exceptionally articulate instructor.
A former Abiola Babes coach.
An assistant coach whose work helped prepare the first Nigerian national football team to reach a FIFA World Cup tournament.
And, for those of us who played under him, a man whose contribution we witnessed firsthand.
We rightly remember the players who competed and the captain who led us. We must also remember the coaches, trainers and medical personnel who prepared us.
๐๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ณ๐ฎ๐ deserves his place as our chief coach.
๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ค๐ ๐๐๐ค๐ฎ๐๐ฎ deserves his place beside him.
The memory of that January morning in Lagos remains vivid: one coach overseeing our final physical preparation, the other concentrating on the match ahead.
Different responsibilities.
Mutual trust.
One Nigerian team.

May his soul continue to rest in peace.
