A footballer wears Nigeriaโ€™s colours, completes the assignment and waits for an allowance already earned. Somewhere else, officials approve budgets, attend international meetings and announce new funding. Years pass. The debt may remain.

That is not football development. It is an indictment of a system in which those who perform the work can become the last to be paid.

๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง is not merely a slogan shouted after another disappointing result. Nigeria has court filings, financial inquiries and documented payment disputes that demand consequences. ๐…) and the ๐…๐ž๐๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐†๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ must each answer for the money within their control.

Those were allegations in criminal proceedings, not court-established sums stolen. The defendants pleaded not guilty.

The EFCC sought to add then-NFF president ๐€๐ฆ๐š๐ฃ๐ฎ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ง๐ข๐œ๐ค and general secretary ๐Œ๐จ๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ ๐’๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข. That ruling must be reported accurately. But it cannot substitute for a public accounting of the underlying grants or a clear update on the cases against the originally charged officials.

Where did the prosecution end? Was any money recovered? Were accounts reconciled? Which projects did those grants finance? Name the completed projects, publish the supporting records and disclose the final legal outcomes.

The NFF, responding to a freedom-of-information request, said relevant documents were before investigators. On ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–, EFCC spokesperson ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฅ๐ž ๐Ž๐ฒ๐ž๐ฐ๐š๐ฅ๐ž confirmed that the investigation continued.

Here is what should follow: a beneficiary-by-beneficiary payment schedule. How much was released by the Federal Government? How much entered federation accounts? Which players, coaches and suppliers were listed? Who received full payment, partial payment or nothing? Which officers authorised each transfer?

The Federal Government cannot announce intervention money and consider its responsibility finished. The Ministry and relevant agencies must account for disbursement, oversight and the outcome.

Two years later, in ๐‰๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“, NFF president ๐ˆ๐›๐ซ๐š๐ก๐ข๐ฆ ๐†๐ฎ๐ฌ๐š๐ฎ said the outstanding amount was small and disputed claims of debts stretching back to 2021. The reasonable response is reconciliation in front of independent player representatives: entitlement, due date, payment evidence, unpaid balance. Not competing declarations while players carry the uncertainty.

When a footballer must threaten a boycott or appeal abroad to obtain an allowance, the institution has pushed its own cash-flow and accountability failures onto the person it should protect.

Super Falcons coach ๐‘๐š๐ง๐๐ฒ ๐–๐š๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ was reportedly owed more than $๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ, including bonuses. The NFF acknowledged delays in paying coaches.

The coach still had to train the team, prepare for opponents and answer for results. The family waiting for a salary cannot spend federation promises.

I am not claiming without evidence that particular unpaid sums financed an officialโ€™s property or lifestyle. I am demanding that investigators examine declared assets, bank transfers, beneficial ownership and unexplained wealth wherever evidence justifies it.

Lives and livelihoods are damaged by unpaid wages. Families carry debts, medical bills and uncertainty. Compassionate leadership settles obligations before asking another player or coach to sacrifice.

๐–๐‡๐Ž ๐๐‘๐Ž๐“๐„๐‚๐“๐’ ๐–๐‡๐Ž๐Œ?

FIFA finances development and has audit and restriction powers. CAF funds programmes and imposes financial controls. The NFF says both organisations audit designated accounts. The Nigerian government supplies separate public funds.

Yet audits alone have not answered the questions arising from the $9.5 million prosecution or the newer โ‚ฆ12 billion inquiry. FIFA and CAF should disclose the Nigeria-specific sums they actually paid, any material findings, restrictions, repayments and verified programme results.

If FIFA can act publicly and urgently when an NFF leadership dispute threatens football autonomy, it can explain just as plainly what happens when money faces serious scrutiny.

Nobody should pronounce individuals guilty before a court establishes their liability. But where investigators prove corruption, criminal charges must be pursued, stolen funds recovered and lawful sentences enforced. Political connections, sporting titles and international relationships must provide no shelter.

Publish the contracts. Publish the transfer records. Publish the findings. Complete the investigations. Prosecute provable wrongdoing. Recover the money. Protect witnesses and players who report irregularities.

Then reform the system: independent player-elected representation; written bonus schedules before tournaments; protected payment arrangements; prompt dispute resolution; and transparent handovers of debts whenever NFF leadership changes.

A footballer who suffers a career-ending injury cannot replay yesterdayโ€™s match. A coach whose family went months without income cannot recover the missed peace of mind merely because administrators eventually issue another statement.

Nigeria must stop treating footballers as expendable creditors to a wealthy-looking institution.

The ultimate test of FIFAโ€™s billions, CAFโ€™s grants and government interventions is not how convincingly officials announce them. It is whether a young footballer is trained, protected, treated with dignity and paid what was promised.

Follow the money beyond the podium. Follow it through the accounts and the courts. Follow it until the footballer is no longer the one paying for everyone elseโ€™s failure.
