The United States military has carried out fresh limited strikes against Iran, targeting an air-defence system on the strategic Qeshm Island, as diplomatic efforts continue to secure an agreement to end the prolonged conflict between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday, November 6, that American forces had struck an Iranian military installation, describing the operation as a minor action aimed at destroying an air-defence system recently established by Tehran.

Trump said the targeted system was knocked out within minutes, although he did not provide further details about the operation.

Iranian state media reported two explosions in the Suza area of Qeshm Island, which lies near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for international oil shipments.

The latest strikes represent another escalation in the conflict, which has continued for more than eight months and disrupted regional security, maritime trade and global energy markets.

The military action comes as Iran considers fresh proposals presented by Qatar, which is mediating efforts to bridge differences between Washington and Tehran.

According to regional officials familiar with the discussions, the proposed arrangement would involve a series of confidence-building measures over two days.

Under the reported proposal, the United States would lift its blockade on Iranian ports and release some of Iran’s frozen financial assets. In return, Tehran would allow international inspectors access to nuclear facilities previously bombed by the United States and Israel.

Iran would also reopen the Strait of Hormuz under a temporary arrangement, paving the way for broader negotiations on its nuclear programme and other outstanding disagreements.

However, Tehran has maintained that it will not enter substantive negotiations over its nuclear activities until Washington addresses several demands.

These include lifting economic sanctions, releasing frozen assets, providing compensation for war damage, ending the blockade on Iranian ports and stopping hostilities across the region, including Israeli military operations in Lebanon.

The White House has not publicly commented on the details of Qatar’s latest proposals, although Trump confirmed that discussions with Iran through mediators were continuing.

Meanwhile, diplomatic engagements have intensified, with Qatar’s Emir holding discussions with Trump, while senior defence officials from both countries also spoke about developments in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also held consultations with his counterparts in Iraq and Tunisia, while Egypt has called on both sides to demonstrate flexibility and pursue diplomatic solutions.

The latest military action also comes days after Trump’s Republican Party suffered significant losses in the United States midterm elections, with voter dissatisfaction over the war and rising fuel prices contributing to the political setback.

Despite the renewed strikes, Washington has continued to signal that a diplomatic resolution remains possible.

The proposed agreement could provide an initial pathway towards de-escalation, although major disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions and regional security remain unresolved.

With tensions continuing around the Strait of Hormuz, the outcome of the negotiations could have significant consequences for Middle Eastern stability and global energy supplies.
