The Abia State Government has commenced full enforcement of its newly introduced centralised transport system in Umuahia, with transport operators beginning a phased relocation to the newly established Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.

The move marks a significant step in the administration’s urban renewal and transport reform agenda aimed at improving traffic management, enhancing commuter safety and bringing greater order to public transportation within the state capital.

State authorities said the initiative is designed to streamline transport operations, eliminate indiscriminate loading and offloading of passengers, and reduce congestion in major commercial and residential areas of Umuahia.

As part of the implementation process, transport unions and operators are being directed to relocate their activities to the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, which will serve as the central hub for transportation services in the city.

Government officials explained that the new system would provide a more organized and secure environment for commuters while enabling regulators to effectively monitor transport operations and enforce standards across the sector.

The centralised transport framework is also expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and support the state’s broader vision of building a modern and efficient urban transportation network.

According to the government, the phased relocation is intended to ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruptions to transport services and commercial activities.

Authorities have appealed to transport unions, drivers, operators and residents to cooperate with the ongoing reforms, assuring stakeholders that the initiative is in the overall interest of the state and its citizens.

Officials maintained that the policy would enhance service delivery, improve the commuting experience and strengthen the management of public transportation in Umuahia.
