Australian Golf Mourns as Rising Star Jessica Bang Dies at 18 in Thailand

The Australian golfing community is mourning the death of rising professional golfer Jessica Bang, who died in Thailand at the age of 18 after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Bang collapsed on August 1 while preparing in Bangkok for the KLPGA Tour’s International Qualifying Tournament. She was rushed to Synphaet Ramintra Hospital, where she underwent emergency brain surgery and was later placed on life support. She died on August 13, according to her family and the WPGA Tour of Australasia.

The teenager had travelled to Thailand as she prepared for an important step in her fledgling professional career. Her sudden medical emergency left her family facing a desperate effort to secure her treatment and eventually return her home to Australia.

The WPGA Tour of Australasia described Bang as an outstanding young talent who had made a significant impression in a short period.

Bang had turned professional only months earlier after qualifying for the WPGA Tour of Australasia. She quickly showed why she was regarded as one of the sport’s promising young players.

In February, during only her fifth professional start, Bang won the Ford Women’s NSW Open Regional Qualifying Event at Moss Vale. She produced a remarkable final round of eight-under-par 65, finishing 13-under-par and winning the event by five shots. The performance also set a new course record.

Her breakthrough victory came just three months after she turned professional, with her mother serving as her caddie during the tournament.

Bang had also recently earned opportunities to compete on both the WPGA and KLPGA circuits, making her death particularly painful for Australian golf, which had watched her professional career begin to gather momentum.

Tributes have since poured in for the young golfer, with colleagues and supporters remembering her talent, personality and potential.

Her family had launched a fundraising campaign during her hospitalisation to help with medical expenses and efforts to bring her back to Australia. The campaign subsequently became a focal point for supporters seeking to help the family during the crisis.

Bang’s death has brought an abrupt end to a promising career that had barely begun.

For Australian golf, the loss is a reminder of a young player whose potential was only beginning to emerge, and whose first professional victory in Moss Vale now stands as one of the defining moments of her short career.
