First Lady Congratulates Flamingos on Historic U-17 World Cup Triumph
The Flamingos made history on Saturday, November 7, after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final played in Rabat, Morocco, to become the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
In her congratulatory message, the First Lady said the team had overcome a difficult start to the competition before recording six consecutive victories to secure the championship.
She said the players had demonstrated the strength of Nigerian football through their teamwork, dedication and hard work, adding that their achievement had brought pride to the country and the African continent.
“I am particularly proud of this inspiring feat which has now placed the country, and indeed Africa, at the pinnacle of women football across the world,” she said.
Tinubu noted that the team’s journey to the trophy was not an easy one, but praised the players for overcoming their early setback and proving their ability to compete at the highest level.
Through your team spirit, dedication and hardwork, Nigeria again is the toast of the world,” she added.
The First Lady also extended her congratulations to the team’s head coach and the entire technical crew, commending their contributions to the historic achievement.
Nigeria’s victory was secured through goals from Awawu Bashiru in the 39th minute and Oluebube Umejiaku in the 47th minute. Japan pulled one goal back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute but could not overturn the deficit.
The triumph marks Nigeria’s first title in the competition and makes the country the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. It also represents a landmark achievement for women’s football on the continent.
