Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with the national team.

The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, through a social media video in which he said he was ready to hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt after the November international break.

“The day has come to hand back the shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said, reflecting on the privilege of representing Portugal for more than two decades.

He described the decision as difficult, saying it was one made with both his head and his heart. He also thanked Portuguese supporters, his family, teammates, coaches and the staff who worked with him throughout his international career.

“Portugal will always be a part of me,” he added.

Ronaldo retires as the leading goalscorer and most-capped player in men’s international football, with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. His international journey began in August 2003, and he went on to become one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history.

One of the defining moments of his career came at the 2016 European Championship in France, where he captained Portugal to their first major international trophy. Although an injury forced him off during the final against France, he continued to encourage his teammates from the touchline as Portugal secured a 1–0 victory after extra time.

He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, adding to a collection of achievements that established his place among the country’s greatest footballers.

Ronaldo’s international career spanned six FIFA World Cup tournaments, from Germany 2006 to the 2026 edition. He also holds the record for the most goals scored in men’s international football, a milestone that places him among the most prolific players in the history of the game.

His retirement announcement follows a period of tension involving Portugal’s national team coach, Jorge Jesus. Reports said Ronaldo left the national team camp in September after learning he would not start a Nations League fixture, and subsequently received a suspension. However, his announcement on Thursday did not present that dispute as the reason for his decision.

Although he is stepping away from international duty, Ronaldo is expected to continue his professional club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

His departure leaves Portugal without its long-serving captain and most prolific international scorer as the national team prepares to move into a new chapter, with younger players expected to take on greater responsibility.

After 23 years, 234 appearances and 146 goals, one of football’s most recognisable international careers has reached its conclusion.
