Brighton End Etihad Hoodoo with 1–0 Victory Over Manchester City
Brighton and Hove Albion have secured a historic 1–0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, moving within two points of the Premier League leaders and strengthening their push for a place among the division’s top teams.
The Seagulls claimed all three points on Saturday after Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari scored the decisive goal in the 11th minute, handing Manchester City their second consecutive league defeat.
The goal came after a defensive mix-up involving City’s Matheus Nunes, whose failure to deal with a low cross allowed the ball to fall into the path of Ayari, who calmly finished from close range.
Despite taking an early lead, Brighton had to withstand considerable pressure from the hosts, particularly in the second half, as City searched for an equaliser.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen proved instrumental in preserving the advantage, producing important saves to frustrate City’s attacking players.
Manchester City registered 21 attempts during the encounter, with only six finding the target. However, they were unable to break through Brighton’s defence.
The hosts also missed a late opportunity when Nico O’Reilly’s effort towards goal was not converted, allowing Brighton to leave Manchester with a memorable victory.
The result marks Brighton’s first-ever Premier League away victory against Manchester City at the Etihad, ending a difficult record against the reigning English football giants on their 18th attempt.
It also represents an important response from Fabian Hürzeler’s side following their Carabao Cup defeat to City on penalties earlier in the week.
With the victory, Brighton moved to 19 points from nine matches, occupying third position in the Premier League table, just two points behind Manchester City and Arsenal, who both have 21 points.
Manchester City remain top on goal difference for now, but Arsenal could move ahead if they avoid defeat against Liverpool in their Sunday fixture.
For City, the defeat represents a worrying setback after losing their previous league match, raising questions about their recent form despite their impressive start to the campaign.
Erling Haaland, who had scored in seven consecutive Premier League matches, was unable to find the net, as City’s attack struggled to convert its opportunities.
Brighton, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from a result that reinforces their growing reputation as genuine contenders for a place in the upper reaches of the table.
With the season still developing, their victory at the Etihad could prove to be one of the defining results of their campaign.
