Manchester United’s difficult season has taken another turn for the worse after a 2–0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, intensifying pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

Second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer condemned United to another disappointing result, while defender Lisandro Martínez was sent off as the visitors suffered a late collapse.

The defeat extended United’s winless run to nine matches in all competitions, their longest such sequence since 1988, according to reports.

United started the encounter brightly and created several opportunities in the first half but failed to convert their chances. Captain Bruno Fernandes, who returned to the starting line-up after being dropped for the previous match, was among those unable to make the most of the opportunities presented.

Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo also threatened Chelsea’s defence, while Bryan Mbeumo struck the post. Cunha appeared to have scored but his effort was ruled out for offside following a video assistant referee review.

Chelsea improved after the break and took the lead in the 50th minute through Rogers, who drove through the middle of United’s defence before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

United’s problems worsened in the 63rd minute when Martínez was shown a second yellow card following an incident involving Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area.

After a VAR review, the referee confirmed the offence and awarded Chelsea a penalty. Palmer stepped forward and converted from the spot in the 64th minute, despite Lammens getting a hand to his effort.

The dismissal left United with 10 men and made their attempt to recover from the deficit considerably more difficult.

The result has further intensified scrutiny of Carrick, whose position was already under pressure following defeats to Bournemouth and Como.

United’s struggles have also been accompanied by growing criticism of the club’s leadership, recruitment decisions and performances from senior players.

Carrick, however, avoided speculation about his future after the match, saying his immediate attention was on preparing the team for its next fixture against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.

He admitted that the game had slipped away from his side after the break, describing the second half as a difficult period for the team.

Despite the growing uncertainty, Carrick praised his players for maintaining their unity during a challenging spell.

The defeat leaves United dangerously close to the relegation zone, with the club having collected just one league victory after nine matches. Chelsea, meanwhile, moved up to fourth place with the three points.

For Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the victory offered a positive response after a difficult week, while the performance of young Brazilian winger Estêvão also attracted attention. The 19-year-old started the match and caused problems for United’s defence, although one of his efforts was ruled out for offside.

United now face an important test against Roma, with supporters increasingly anxious about the direction of the club and whether Carrick can turn around its fortunes.

With the team struggling for results and the relegation zone becoming an uncomfortable possibility, the coming fixtures could prove decisive for the manager’s future at Old Trafford.
