Daniel Dubois delivered a devastating performance to stop Fabio Wardley in the second round of their heavyweight rematch in London, retaining his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) title with a dominant display that lasted just over five minutes.

The British rivals met at The O2 Arena on Saturday, October 17, five months after their first encounter ended with Dubois claiming the title through an 11th-round stoppage in Manchester.

This time, Dubois wasted little time asserting his authority. He sent Wardley to the canvas with a powerful right hand just 17 seconds after the opening bell, forcing the challenger to beat the count before resuming the contest.

Wardley attempted to recover, but Dubois continued to press forward with heavy punches, leaving the challenger struggling to cope with the champion’s power and relentless attack.

The first round ended with Wardley under intense pressure against the ropes. He managed to survive until the bell, but Dubois resumed his assault in the second round, landing a series of punches that left the challenger unable to mount an effective response.

With Wardley absorbing further punishment, his trainer, Ben Davison, threw in the towel. Referee Steve Gray stopped the contest at two minutes and 21 seconds of the second round, handing Dubois a decisive victory.

After the fight, Dubois declared that it was “my time and my era”, signalling his ambition to establish himself among the leading heavyweights in world boxing.

The victory improved Dubois’ professional record to 24 wins and three defeats, including 23 knockouts. Wardley’s record moved to 20 wins, two losses and one draw.

Wardley had shown considerable resilience in their first meeting, recovering from two knockdowns before eventually losing in the 11th round. The rematch, however, was markedly different, with Dubois taking control from the opening seconds and giving his opponent little opportunity to settle.

Despite the defeat, Wardley praised the challenge of competing against elite opponents and indicated that he intended to return stronger. The loss was only the second defeat of his professional career.

The result also revived discussion about Dubois’ prospects of securing another major heavyweight bout. Filip Hrgovic, the reigning IBF champion, was present at ringside and publicly challenged Dubois to face him in a potential title unification contest.

Dubois expressed interest in reclaiming the IBF championship he previously held, although a future bout would depend on negotiations and the division’s developing schedule.

For now, the emphatic victory gives Dubois momentum and reinforces his position as a major contender in the heavyweight division, while Wardley faces the task of regrouping after a difficult night in London.
