Wyndham Clark moved within touching distance of a second U.S. Open title after extending his lead to six shots heading into the final round at Shinnecock Hills, leaving the rest of the field facing a daunting challenge to catch the American.

Clark carded an even-par 70 in difficult and windy conditions on Saturday to remain at seven-under-par overall. The 2023 U.S. Open champion produced a composed display highlighted by crucial par saves and the tournament’s first eagle on the par-five 16th hole, helping him widen his advantage over the chasing pack.

The 32-year-old now holds one of the largest 54-hole leads in recent U.S. Open history and is bidding to become a two-time champion. No player has ever squandered a lead greater than five shots in the tournament’s history, making Clark the overwhelming favorite heading into Sunday’s final round.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler remains Clark’s closest challenger despite trailing by six strokes. Scheffler fired a one-under 69, one of the few sub-par rounds of the day, to move into a tie for second place alongside Tom Kim, Sam Stevens and Sahith Theegala.

While the gap appears significant, Scheffler still has plenty to play for. Victory at Shinnecock Hills would complete a career Grand Slam for the American, adding the U.S. Open to his victories at the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open Championship. The achievement would place him among golf’s most elite players.

Scheffler’s hopes were boosted by a strong finish on the back nine, where he produced a string of birdies to stay within striking distance. The world number one will play alongside Clark in the final pairing, giving him a direct opportunity to apply pressure from the opening tee shot.

Elsewhere, hopes faded for several high-profile contenders. Rory McIlroy dropped out of contention after a difficult back nine, while other major champions struggled to cope with the demanding conditions at Shinnecock Hills.

With only one round remaining, Clark stands on the verge of another major triumph. However, with Scheffler chasing both the title and a place in golfing history, the final day promises a compelling showdown at one of the sport’s most challenging venues.
