Morocco Hotel Under Investigation After Super Falcons Report Missing Money

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have been overshadowed by allegations that several members of the Super Falcons were robbed while staying at a hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, just days before the start of the continental tournament.

The allegations surfaced after Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo posted on social media that cash had disappeared from her wallet while the team was lodged at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca. She initially claimed that $500 had been stolen before later correcting the figure to $700 after recounting her money. Okoronkwo alleged that housekeeping staff entered players’ rooms while they were away and took the cash.

According to multiple reports, Okoronkwo was not the only player affected. Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade reportedly lost $200, veteran defender Osinachi Ohale $100, midfielder Halimatu Ayinde $100, and Joy Omewa $120, bringing the total reported losses to more than $1,200.

In a series of Snapchat posts, Okoronkwo expressed frustration with the response from hotel officials, claiming that management failed to provide satisfactory answers after the incident was reported. She alleged that staff members became dismissive when the players demanded an explanation.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had not issued an immediate public statement when the allegations first emerged. However, the team’s media officer later confirmed that the matter had been reported to the relevant Moroccan authorities and was under investigation. As of the latest reports, neither the hotel nor investigators had announced any findings or identified suspects.

The incident has generated widespread reaction among Nigerian football supporters, many expressing concern about the team’s welfare ahead of its opening WAFCON fixture. The alleged theft also revived memories of previous complaints by visiting African teams regarding accommodation and logistics during major tournaments in Morocco, although there is no evidence linking those incidents to the current allegations.

Despite the controversy, the Super Falcons have continued their preparations for the tournament. Nigeria, the defending champions and Africa’s most successful women’s national team, are aiming to win a record-extending 11th WAFCON title. The players have remained in camp while authorities continue to investigate the reported thefts.

Football analysts say the timing of the incident is unfortunate, as it risks distracting the squad from its preparations. Team officials are expected to focus on ensuring the players remain concentrated on their campaign while the investigation proceeds independently.

For now, the alleged robbery remains under official investigation. No arrests have been announced, and the Marriott Hotel has not publicly responded to the specific allegations reported by the players.
