Italian side Como delivered a stunning 4–1 defeat to Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, piling further pressure on manager Michael Carrick after a disappointing performance in Italy.

Argentina international Nico Paz starred for Como, scoring twice and providing an assist as Cesc Fàbregas’ side dominated the English club at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Paz opened the scoring just three minutes into the encounter, giving Como an early advantage and leaving United chasing the game. The hosts maintained their attacking threat, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens forced into several interventions to prevent the deficit from growing before half-time.

Manchester United made changes at the interval in an attempt to regain control, but Como struck again four minutes into the second half when Paz set up Tasos Douvikas to make it 2–0.

Paz then scored his second goal of the night in the 57th minute, extending Como’s lead to three and putting United in an increasingly difficult position.

Como continued to exploit gaps in United’s defence, and Jacobo Ramón headed in the fourth goal in the 76th minute following a well-worked attacking move involving Kaiki.

Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for Manchester United in stoppage time after being set up by Amad Diallo, but the goal did little to change the outcome of the contest.

The defeat represents a significant setback for Carrick, whose team struggled to contain Como’s movement, passing and attacking intensity. United’s defensive difficulties were particularly evident as the Italian side repeatedly created opportunities to threaten their goal.

According to Reuters, the result has intensified scrutiny of Carrick, with United extending their winless run across competitions to seven matches.

The result also highlights Como’s rapid rise under Fàbregas. The club, which was competing in Italy’s fourth division as recently as 2019, has emerged as a force in Italian football and is now making its mark in European competition.

For Como, the emphatic victory represents a major statement of intent in the Champions League. For Manchester United, it raises fresh questions about defensive organisation, tactical decisions and the team’s ability to compete consistently at the highest level.

United will now face renewed pressure to respond in their next fixture as Carrick seeks to arrest the team’s poor run of form.
