Milwaukee Brewers End 44-Year Wait for World Series Return
The Milwaukee Brewers have swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) to secure their first World Series appearance since 1982, ending the defending champions’ bid for a third consecutive title.
Milwaukee sealed the four-game sweep with a 6-4 comeback victory at Dodger Stadium on Thursday, October 15, overcoming an early four-run deficit to claim the National League pennant. The victory ends a 44-year wait for the Brewers, who are now preparing for their second appearance in the World Series.
The Dodgers initially appeared in control after Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run home run in the second inning, helping Los Angeles establish a 4-0 lead. However, Milwaukee gradually fought its way back into the contest before Garrett Mitchell delivered the decisive blow with a solo home run in the sixth inning off Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott.
Mitchell’s homer put the Brewers ahead for the first time in the game. David Hamilton then extended the advantage in the ninth inning with a solo home run off Edwin Díaz, giving Milwaukee a two-run cushion.
The Brewers’ bullpen played a crucial role in preserving the lead, shutting down several late Dodgers threats. Aaron Ashby delivered three scoreless innings to secure the save, while Milwaukee’s relievers prevented Los Angeles from mounting another comeback. First baseman Jake Bauers was named the NLCS Most Valuable player.
The victory marked a remarkable turnaround for Milwaukee, which was swept by the Dodgers in the same playoff round last season. The Brewers also became the first Major League Baseball team to sweep a best-of-seven postseason series despite trailing in every game, according to MLB.
Milwaukee finished the regular season with a major-league-leading 103 wins, and its latest performance has raised expectations as the team pursues its first World Series championship.
The franchise’s only previous World Series appearance came in 1982, when the Brewers were still part of the American League. They lost that series to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
The Brewers are scheduled to host Game 1 of the World Series on October 23. Their opponent will be determined by the outcome of the American League Championship Series between Cleveland and Tampa Bay.
For Milwaukee, the sweep represents more than a place in the championship series: it is a chance to turn decades of waiting into the franchise’s first World Series title.
