Real Madrid Confirm Mbappé Knee Injury, Expected to Miss Out Two Weeks

Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappé has suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee, with reports indicating that the France captain is expected to be sidelined for about two weeks.

The club announced the diagnosis on Saturday after the forward returned from international duty with France and underwent medical examinations at Real Madrid.

“After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by Real Madrid’s Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee. Awaiting evolution,” the club said in its medical report.

Mbappé sustained the injury during France’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Türkiye on Friday. He scored the only goal of the match but was forced off shortly afterwards after appearing to experience pain in his left knee.

The 27-year-old initially received treatment and briefly returned to the pitch before going down again. France coach Zinedine Zidane subsequently substituted him in the 58th minute.

The French Football Federation had initially described the problem as a knee tendon injury and confirmed that Mbappé would leave the national-team camp for further assessment in Madrid. Real Madrid’s subsequent examination provided the more specific diagnosis.

Reports from Spain indicate that the expected recovery period is around two weeks. That would give Mbappé a chance of returning around the time Real Madrid resume LaLiga action against Villarreal on October 10, although his availability will depend on his recovery and the club’s medical assessment.

The injury is another setback for Mbappé after he dealt with a left-knee problem during the 2025-26 campaign. Real Madrid had previously confirmed a left-knee sprain in March following examinations by French specialists.

For now, the club has not announced a fixed return date, saying only that his recovery will be monitored. Mbappé will therefore continue his rehabilitation under Real Madrid’s medical team as the club assesses his progress.
