Fenerbahçe stun Liverpool with dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory
Fenerbahçe produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Liverpool 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, handing the English side a painful defeat at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul.
The Turkish giants recovered from falling behind to secure all three points in a thrilling Matchday Four encounter, with substitute Vedat Muriqi scoring the decisive goal in the 79th minute.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Trey Nyoni, whose effort took a deflection before beating Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson.
The hosts responded four minutes later when Mason Greenwood converted a free-kick, which also took a deflection, to restore parity.
Both sides went into the break level at 1-1, with Fenerbahçe showing greater attacking intent as the home crowd continued to drive the team forward.
Liverpool regained the advantage in the 69th minute after substitute Alexander Isak headed home a cross from Cody Gakpo.
However, Fenerbahçe refused to surrender, equalising four minutes later through Archie Brown, who converted from close range after Gakpo inadvertently redirected N’Golo Kanté’s cross into a dangerous area.
The hosts completed their comeback in the 79th minute when Muriqi rose to head home Brown’s cross, sending the Istanbul supporters into celebration.
Liverpool pushed for a late equaliser, but Fenerbahçe held on to secure an impressive 3-2 victory.
The result marked Fenerbahçe’s first Champions League victory of the campaign, ending a lengthy winless run in the competition’s main phase.
It also dealt a blow to Liverpool’s perfect start to the league phase, having won their opening three matches before travelling to Istanbul.
The encounter was particularly significant for Fenerbahçe interim manager Dirk Kuyt, who faced his former club. The former Liverpool forward spent six years at Anfield between 2006 and 2012.
