Milan on Edge as Atalanta Visit Threatens Champions League Hopes
AC Milan welcome Atalanta to the San Siro on Sunday, with the hosts looking to arrest a late-season slump that has loosened their grip on a Champions League qualifying spot as the Serie A finale approaches.
With the Scudetto race settled following Inter Milan’s coronation last week, the focus has shifted dramatically to the scramble for the remaining three Champions League berths. Second-placed Napoli are favourites for the runners-up spot, but the real drama lies in the battle for third and fourth.
Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan are currently third, but a run of four defeats in their last seven league matches has invited intense pressure from a hungry chasing pack. The trio of Como, Juventus, and an in-form AS Roma now enter the final stretch knowing that any further slip-ups by the Rossoneri could open the door to Europe’s elite club competition.

Milan’s struggles have been most acute in attack, having scored just one goal in their last five matches. Forwards Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leao, and Santiago Gimenez have all struggled to find the net this season, and the 2-0 defeat at Sassuolo last week was a particular low point . That loss was compounded by the dismissal of defender Fikayo Tomori, whose subsequent suspension leaves Allegri with a defensive void to fill against one of the league’s most potent counter-attacking units. To make matters worse, veteran midfielder Luka Modric is expected to remain sidelined with an injury, leaving the team short of composure in the middle of the park.
Despite the growing anxiety, Allegri has attempted to project calm. “It’s (Champions League spot) not at risk. I would be very happy to confirm it on the final day as well, I’ve always said it,” he said after the Sassuolo loss. “We’ve done 10 months of good work, we’re in the final stretch. We haven’t done very well in the second half of the season, we can’t change that anymore. We just have to look ahead”.
However, former Milan and Italy winger Roberto Donadoni believes the fear is legitimate. “It is legitimate to have fears that the Champions League could slip away. The path of the last month and a half has not been positive, and this is the moment when character must come out. Milan remains ahead, but they can no longer make mistakes nor think of managing. They need the three points already against Atalanta because Roma is going strong,” Donadoni told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
He added that missing out on the tournament would render the season negative. “Not qualifying for the Champions League would make the season negative because Milan would be out for two consecutive years from the most important European cup. The team must not have these thoughts, however. Fear and tension risk paralyzing you. It is better to gather all possible energy and concentrate on giving your best”.
Journalist Carlo Pellegatti went even further, describing the match as potentially decisive for the club’s medium-term future. “Milan-Atalanta is not just a football match, but it is the most important match for the next 3-4 years. I’m not exaggerating,” Pellegatti said. “Not going to the Champions League would once again mean a market with limited expenses, with difficulty in finding players who obviously do not want to, or rather, who prefer to play in the Champions League”.
The chasing pack is lurking with intent. Juventus travel to Lecce on Saturday, sitting two points behind Milan in fourth . Roma have emerged as the form team in the race, moving within a single point of the top four after a dominant 4-0 victory over Fiorentina. Meanwhile, surprise package Como also remain firmly in the conversation, knowing that a win could potentially lift them into a Champions League spot by the end of the weekend.
With Atalanta still capable of causing damage and the chasing pack breathing down their neck, the pressure on the Rossoneri to deliver at San Siro has never been greater. Reports suggest Allegri is considering a major shake-up for the clash, with star winger Rafael Leao potentially dropped to the bench in favour of a more reliable option as the manager looks for a reaction from his faltering squad.
