Argentina Coach Lionel Scaloni Accepts Contract Extension Proposal
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has agreed to a new contract with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), paving the way for him to continue leading the national team towards the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Reports from Argentine media, including Noticias Argentinas and La Nación, said the 48-year-old coach had accepted the federation’s proposal after negotiations with AFA president Claudio Tapia. The remaining contractual details are being finalised before the agreement is formally signed.
According to the reports, the proposed deal follows a two-plus-two-year structure. The initial contract would run until 2028, with a renewal clause that could extend Scaloni’s tenure through the 2030 World Cup, subject to the terms agreed by both parties.
The agreement follows months of uncertainty over Scaloni’s future after his existing contract was due to expire in December 2026. The coach had previously indicated that he was willing to discuss an extension but needed to consider several factors before committing to another cycle.
Scaloni’s future became a major talking point after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain. The defeat came after a successful period under his leadership, which saw Argentina win the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2024 Copa América.
Appointed in 2018, Scaloni transformed Argentina into one of international football’s leading sides, ending the country’s 36-year wait for a World Cup title in Qatar. His continued presence would offer stability as the team prepares for a new phase following Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football.
The proposed extension would also give Scaloni an opportunity to oversee the development of younger players and shape Argentina’s squad for the next World Cup cycle.
An official announcement from the AFA had not been made at the time of reporting. Argentine media reports indicated that the agreement was close to completion, with the formal signing and announcement expected once the remaining details had been settled.
Argentina are expected to continue their preparations with international friendlies in November as the team begins looking ahead to the next major tournaments.
