Cristiano Ronaldo is facing disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team’s training camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus, with reports indicating that he could be banned for between one and six months.

The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward’s departure from Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, triggered disciplinary consequences under federation rules governing players who leave international duty without authorisation. The FPF’s disciplinary council is expected to determine the length of any punishment, taking into account the circumstances surrounding the incident and Ronaldo’s subsequent apology.

However, as of October 10, the final length of the ban had not been officially announced. A report by Goal.com on October 9 said the disciplinary council had not yet issued a ruling on Ronaldo’s case.

The dispute reportedly began after Ronaldo was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway in their Nations League campaign. Ronaldo said he had expected to play for approximately 30 minutes after discussions with Jesus, but the coach ultimately decided not to introduce him.

Ronaldo subsequently accused Jesus of breaking agreements they had reached over his playing time and how the situation would be explained publicly. Jesus, however, had previously denied that there was an incident between them, saying that his decision not to bring Ronaldo on was a tactical one.

The disagreement escalated when Ronaldo left the team’s training camp ahead of Portugal’s match against Denmark. The FPF confirmed his departure but initially offered little explanation, saying preparations for the team’s fixtures would continue with the remaining players.

In a public statement released after the incident, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to his teammates and supporters. He acknowledged that his position as national team captain made his conduct particularly serious and said the federation should assess and punish his actions.

“The consequences of my actions must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” Ronaldo said, according to his statement reported by Reuters. He also maintained that he remained committed to representing Portugal after serving any suspension imposed on him.

A suspension lasting more than one month could rule Ronaldo out of Portugal’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales in November, although the precise impact will depend on the final disciplinary decision and its effective dates. Reports suggest a lengthy ban is considered unlikely, but the federation has yet to confirm the outcome.

The episode has raised questions about the relationship between Portugal’s captain and Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. It has also placed the federation in a difficult position as it weighs disciplinary consistency against the importance of its most prominent player.

Despite the controversy, Ronaldo has indicated that he intends to continue representing Portugal, leaving the final decision on his punishment, and the timing of his return to international football in the hands of the federation.
