Georgia Poised to Claim No. 1 Ranking as Texas, LSU and Florida Fall in Upset-Filled Weekend
No. 2 Georgia is positioned to move to the top of the Associated Press college football rankings after a dramatic weekend that saw No. 1 Texas, No. 10 LSU and No. 16 Florida suffer damaging defeats.
Georgia strengthened its case for the top spot with a 20–17 victory over No. 6 Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, October 10. Quarterback Gunner Stockton threw for 249 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score, as the Bulldogs secured a significant Southeastern Conference victory.
Georgia’s defence played a decisive role, recording four sacks and limiting Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell to 185 passing yards. The result improved head coach Kirby Smart’s record against Alabama to 3–7 and gave Georgia a major win that could strengthen its position in the race for the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.
The Bulldogs’ opportunity to climb to No. 1 came after Oklahoma produced one of the weekend’s biggest surprises, defeating top-ranked Texas 27–24 in the Red River Rivalry in Dallas.
Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell secured the victory with a 47-yard field goal as time expired. The decisive opportunity followed an interception by Courtland Guillory, who picked off Texas quarterback Arch Manning with 19 seconds remaining.
Manning finished with 260 passing yards and three touchdowns but threw two interceptions as Texas suffered its first defeat of the season. The victory was Oklahoma’s first against a top-ranked opponent since 2007 and provided a significant boost to head coach Brent Venables’ programme.
LSU also suffered a painful setback, losing 35–34 to Kentucky in overtime. The Wildcats opted for a two-point conversion and succeeded, securing another dramatic victory after winning an overtime game the previous week.
Florida endured a difficult outing of its own, falling 38–19 at home to South Carolina. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers accounted for five touchdowns, while South Carolina forced three turnovers to secure the upset.
Elsewhere, No. 21 UCLA maintained its unbeaten record with a 17–15 victory over No. 13 Oregon. The Ducks committed costly turnovers, including five lost fumbles, as UCLA preserved its perfect start.
No. 7 Indiana also remained unbeaten, rallying from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Nebraska 20–17. The Hoosiers scored two late touchdowns before making defensive stops to protect the win.
With Texas defeated and Georgia coming off a victory against a highly ranked opponent, the next AP Top 25 poll is expected to bring significant changes near the top of the rankings. Georgia has a strong case to take over first place, while LSU and other defeated teams could lose ground.
The weekend’s results have also reshaped the early College Football Playoff conversation, underlining how quickly the national picture can change as conference games intensify.
