Bayelsa At 30: Diri Honours Ernest Ikoli, Anthony George-Ikoli

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has approved state honours for two prominent members of the Ikoli family, late nationalist and journalist, Sir Ernest Sisei Ikoli, and legal luminary, Chief Anthony George-Ikoli, SAN, as part of activities marking the state’s 30th anniversary.

Sir Ernest Sisei Ikoli, a Bayelsa-born nationalist, journalist and pioneer editor of the Daily Times of Nigeria, was selected for the award posthumously in recognition of his contributions to the state and the country.

Also named for the honour is Chief Anthony George-Ikoli, SAN, a former Attorney-General of Bayelsa State and prominent legal practitioner.

The recognition was conveyed in separate letters dated September 16, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei.

The letters, titled “Award for Distinguished Service and Contribution to Bayelsa State,” formally notified the recipients of the state government’s decision to honour them.

The awards are scheduled to be presented on October 1, 2026, in Yenagoa as part of activities commemorating Bayelsa State’s 30th anniversary.

The recognition of the two members of the Ikoli dynasty highlights their contributions to journalism, public service, law and the development of Bayelsa State.

The announcement has been welcomed by members of the Ikoli family and associates, who described the honours as a fitting recognition of the legacy of the distinguished Bayelsa family.
