Madonna University, Rivers State, has confirmed the expulsion of some nursing students over a video recorded inside its teaching hospital and subsequently circulated on social media.

The video, which generated reactions online, showed the students inside the hospital accompanied by the caption, “No sick oo, nah Gen Z full hospital.”

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Chima Achu, confirmed the expulsion and said the institution was preparing an official statement on the matter.

“We’re preparing a response that’ll go out on Monday; of course there’ll be an official position by the university,” Achu said.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has appealed to the university management to reconsider the expulsion and adopt a less severe disciplinary measure.

NANS President, Akinteye “Babtee” Afeez, acknowledged that the students’ conduct was inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of discipline and professionalism expected within the university community.

However, he appealed to the institution to temper the punishment with mercy, arguing that expulsion could have serious consequences for the students’ education and future careers.

Afeez said the affected students had spent years pursuing careers in nursing and deserved an opportunity to learn from their misconduct rather than have their academic aspirations permanently terminated.

He urged the university to replace the expulsion with a stern warning or another disciplinary measure that would hold the students accountable while allowing them to continue their education.

According to him, the students had recognised the gravity of their actions and were already remorseful.
