The opening of admission portals for various aviation institutions across Nigeria has sparked widespread reactions from prospective students and parents, with many expressing both excitement and anxiety over the competitive entry requirements.

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, has officially released its admission list for the 2025/2026 National Diploma programmes, drawing attention to the rigorous process involved in securing a spot at the prestigious institution.

Meanwhile, the Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management in Lagos has also become a focal point of discussion following the admission of its first major cohort of students.

In a significant development that has generated considerable buzz, the Borno State Government recently sponsored 54 students for specialised pilot and engineering training at Isaac Balami University.

The founder of the university, Isaac Balami, described the admission as a milestone for aviation education in Nigeria, stating, “Today is a historic day for us as we receive the first 54 pilots and aircraft engineers sponsored by the Borno State Government under the leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum. This is the first batch of students admitted into our specialised programme”.

He further explained that the programme is structured to produce graduates who are certified engineers and pilots, noting, “This is the first time you will find a university where students combine classroom learning with about 1,000 hours of practical training annually inside a functional aircraft hangar”.

Prospective applicants have been actively seeking clarity on entry requirements, with many online inquiries focusing on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) cut-off marks. According to responses on educational forums, candidates generally need a score of 120 and above to be eligible for admission and the Post-UTME screening at NCAT.

This information has been a key point of discussion among aspiring aviation students who are now rushing to complete their applications before the deadlines.

The admission drive has also been accompanied by calls for greater inclusivity. Two female beneficiaries of the Borno State scholarship, including Ihsan Yakubu, have encouraged other young women to pursue careers in aviation.

Yakubu shared her excitement, saying, “This career in aviation has always been a dream and a goal for me. I am so happy and excited that I got this scholarship”.

Her remarks have resonated with many, as observers note that the field is gradually becoming more accessible to female students.

Additionally, the Universal School of Aviation has announced that admission is still in progress for the 2026 session, with matriculation programmes scheduled for February, indicating that multiple institutions are actively seeking to enroll new students.

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has emphasized the importance of focus and dedication for successful candidates, advising them to “remain dedicated and become good ambassadors of our state”.

The governor recently presented a cheque of N2.5 billion to cover the tuition fees for the sponsored students, underscoring the state’s commitment to rebuilding its education sector.
