Tinubu Upgrades Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to Specialised University of Mining, Engineering and Technology
President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, as part of efforts to strengthen technical education and accelerate the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The approval was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, the upgrade aligns with the Tinubu administration’s commitment to developing human capital and unlocking the country’s vast solid mineral resources through specialised education and research.
The statement said the approval followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, who advocated the establishment of a specialised institution to harness the state’s rich mineral deposits and support Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda.
Under the presidential directive, the new university will focus on teaching, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies.
It is also expected to produce the skilled workforce needed to drive value addition, technological advancement and the sustainable exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
The Presidency said the conversion reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to aligning the nation’s tertiary education system with its economic development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda through the establishment of specialised institutions.
President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant agencies to begin the legal and administrative processes required to implement the conversion.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation, job creation and national prosperity.
