Real Madrid Captain Dani Carvajal Set to Exit Club After 23 Years
Real Madrid have officially announced that club captain Dani Carvajal will leave the team at the end of the current season. The decision was made not to extend the 34-year-old defender’s contract, which expires in June.
The official club statement read, “Real Madrid C.F. and our captain Dani Carvajal have agreed to bring an end to a wonderful chapter as a player of our club at the conclusion of the current season” . Real Madrid president Florentino Perez paid tribute to the departing legend, saying, “Dani Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy. Carvajal has always exemplified the values of Real Madrid. This is and will always be his home”.

Carvajal first joined Real Madrid’s academy as a 10-year-old in 2002. Apart from one season at Bayer Leverkusen, which prompted the club to activate a buy-back clause, he has spent his entire professional career at the Bernabeu, making 450 appearances and scoring 14 goals. He leaves as one of the most decorated players in football history with 27 trophies, including six Champions League titles—a record only four other players share.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or nominee’s final season has been plagued by injuries. After returning from a serious ACL tear, Carvajal has struggled with fitness and lost his starting spot to summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa has been blunt about the situation, recently stating, “I have 23 players. Any Real Madrid player has options to go to the World Cup and, if you allow me, I’m going to think about what’s best for my team”.
His final appearance for Los Blancos is expected to come against Athletic Club this weekend, where the Bernabeu will hold a tribute ceremony for the departing icon . Regarding his future, Carvajal hinted in a 2024 interview that he does not intend to play in Europe after leaving Madrid, with Major League Soccer listed as a “possibility”.
He has also been ruled out of contention for Spain’s World Cup squad due to his lack of match fitness.
