Senate Reverses Decision on National Assembly Service Pension Board Bill
The Senate has reversed an earlier decision on Sections 7 and 8 of the National Assembly Service Pension Board (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, following the discovery of issues requiring fresh legislative action.
The reversal followed a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who informed the chamber that the bill had been passed and forwarded to the Legal Services Directorate for scrutiny.
Bamidele explained that a critical review of the legislation by the directorate revealed fundamental issues with Sections 7 and 8, making further legislative action by both chambers of the National Assembly necessary.
He urged the Senate to reconsider its earlier position in line with the provisions of the chamber’s Standing Orders.
Relying on Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders, the lawmakers approved the proposed amendments.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the plenary, subsequently read out the chamber’s decision.
The development underscores the Senate’s efforts to address the identified issues in the pension board legislation before further legislative action by the National Assembly.
