DELTA STATE GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI DEFECTS TO APC ALONG WITH PDP STRUCTURE

The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection, which was announced by pioneer PDP state chairman, James Manager, marks the end of the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the oil-rich South-south state. Manager cited the PDP’s national leadership crisis and its weakened position with only 11 governors as reasons for the move. “The party’s instability and recent resolutions against coalitions diminished its electoral prospects,” he said. The defection is attributed to local political challenges, including Oborevwori’s strained relationship with former Governor James Ibori, who opposed him in the 2022 PDP primary. The influence of President Bola Tinubu’s allies, such as Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and the death of Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, further weakened Oborevwori’s position in the PDP. The PDP’s declining popularity in Delta State, evident in its 2023 election losses, including the presidential vote to the Labour Party, also contributed to the defection. Additionally, the ongoing EFCC investigation of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa may have incentivized the move, with hopes of leniency under APC membership. Senator Ned Nwoko, a recent APC defector, welcomed the new members, promising collaboration. While the APC may not guarantee popularity in Delta, it offers Oborevwori federal government support and protection from local adversaries, securing his political survival amid a turbulent PDP landscape.

MASSIVE DEFECTION ROCKS DELTA STATE AS GOVERNOR AND EX-GOVERNOR DUMP PDP FOR APC

In an unprecedented move, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made on Wednesday in Asaba, the Delta State capital, by Senator James Manager, shortly after a meeting that lasted over six hours at Government House, Asaba. Manager stated, “All PDP members in the state, including the governor, former Governor Okowa, the Speaker, the state party chairman, all the local government chairmen and others, have agreed to move to the APC. We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat,” he said. The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniagwu Charles, officially confirmed the governor’s defection and the collective decision of Delta PDP leaders and stakeholders to join the APC. This development marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, with potential implications for the 2027 general elections. The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary had earlier hinted at the decision, saying it was reached after “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development”. The mass defection from PDP to APC is seen as a strategic realignment that could reshape the state’s politics.

PDP CRISIS DEEPENS AS SENATOR ANYANWU REJECTS GOVERNORS’ FORUM RESOLUTION

The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, has rejected a resolution by the PDP Governors Forum appointing an Acting National Secretary, describing it as unconstitutional and a direct violation of the PDP Constitution and a Supreme Court judgment. Anyanwu’s spokesperson, Comrade Daboikiabo Z. Warmate, stated that the governors’ move is a “draconian” attempt to usurp party structures, calling it a “coup d’état” against the PDP. “The PDP Constitution clearly stipulates how a national officer of the party can be elected, appointed, replaced, or removed in line with sections 45, 47, 49, 57, and 59,” Warmate said. “Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu has neither resigned nor vacated the office of National Secretary, making the appointment of an acting secretary baseless.” Warmate emphasized that only the National Convention holds the authority to appoint or remove national officers, adding that Anyanwu remains the legitimate National Secretary until December 2025. “It’s an aberration to have a substitutive National Secretary in the person of Senator Samuel Anyanwu and appoint the Deputy National Secretary in an acting capacity,” Warmate said. The PDP Governors Forum’s resolution has sparked controversy, with Anyanwu accusing the governors of acting beyond their constitutional powers and stirring internal party conflict. Warmate warned of dire consequences if the resolution is not immediately reversed, urging the governors to adhere to due process and avoid damaging the PDP’s credibility and unity. “Plateau must not bleed again” isn’t relevant here; instead, “The governors are making our great party a laughing stock,” Warmate noted, criticizing the governors’ actions as “replicating” the actions of the ruling APC. Anyanwu has resumed office as National Secretary, defying the Governors Forum’s recognition of Hon. Sunday Ude-Okoye for the position.

EDO GOVERNMENT HITS BACK AT PDP OVER ALLEGATIONS AGAINST GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO

The Edo State Government has responded to allegations made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Governor Monday Okpebholo, describing the claims as “reckless, misleading, and malicious”. In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, said the PDP’s statement was a “shameful display of the PDP’s consistent obsession with fabricating lies” against the Governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. Itua stated that the PDP’s tenure in power was defined by deceit, maladministration, and a relentless assault on truth and transparency, making them morally unfit to lecture on constitutional order or democratic values. “It is hypocritical for the same PDP that has consistently desecrated the rule of law through executive impunity and abuse of office to now quote the Electoral Act in a dishonest attempt to score cheap political points,” Itua said. The government warned that PDP officials, including Chris Nehikhare, would be held accountable for their allegations against Governor Okpebholo and other public officials. “Enough is enough. These unfounded and unsubstantiated claims have no bearing on the truth, and they constitute a deliberate effort to mislead the public, disrupt governance, and cause disaffection in the State,” Itua added. Fred Itua further accused the PDP of turning political discourse into a “theatre of lies and bitterness” and claimed they had resolved to destabilize Edo State through misinformation and character assassination. However, the government assured that Governor Okpebholo’s administration would not be distracted and remains focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State. “Edo belongs to all of us, and no amount of bitterness or false propaganda will derail the will of the people or slow down the pace of development,” Itua emphasized. The government warned PDP leaders to desist from peddling falsehoods or provide evidence for their claims at the right time.

EDO PDP REJECTS TRIBUNAL RULING, HEADS TO APPEAL

The Edo State Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo, dismissing the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo. However, the Edo State chapter of the PDP has rejected the tribunal’s ruling, stating that they will take their case to the appellate courts. In a statement, the Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr. Tony Azlegbemi, said, “Although we hold the judiciary in the highest esteem as a political party and respect the duly elected by the majority of the voters in that election, we completely disagree with the decision of the tribunal.” Dr. Azlegbemi emphasized that the PDP believes its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, was duly elected by the majority of voters in the September 21, 2024, governorship election. Dr. Azlegbemi stated that the party is certain it sufficiently proved its case before the tribunal, and it is on this conviction that they are taking their case to the appellate courts. He called on all PDP members to rise up from the ashes of this temporary setback, saying, “As firm believers in the rule of law and the ultimate superiority of right over wrong, we call on all our supporters to keep hope alive”. Dr. Azlegbemi urged party supporters to keep hope alive as they explore all available democratic means of enthroning the will of the people of Edo State. The Edo State Election Petition Tribunal’s ruling was based on the petitioners’ failure to prove allegations of over-voting and electoral non-compliance.

EDO STATE GOVERNMENT RAISES ALARM OVER RISING INSECURITY, CALLS FOR ACTION AGAINST SPONSORS OF ARMED THUGS

The Edo State Government has expressed grave concern over the rising wave of insecurity fuelled by armed thugs and criminal elements associated with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, noted that these individuals, who were heavily armed before the 2024 Edo Governorship Election, have refused to surrender their weapons, posing a clear and present danger to the safety of citizens. Itua stated that former Governor Godwin Obaseki had openly threatened that “Nigeria would burn” before the last election, which was not a mere political outburst, but a premeditated declaration backed by the systematic arming of touts and thugs. These individuals, many of whom were drafted into the Edo State Security Network under the previous administration, still possess over 5,000 illegal firearms, which they now use to perpetrate robbery, kidnapping, and violent attacks across the State. The Edo State Government is aware that PDP leaders, who had direct control over these armed operatives, have refused to assist in disarming them. Instead, they continue to shield these criminals, providing them with cover as they unleash terror on innocent citizens. Itua said intelligence reports indicate that PDP leaders are stockpiling additional arms, with the intention of orchestrating mayhem should their candidate, Asue Ighodalo, fail to secure victory at the Tribunal. The State Government is calling on all security agencies to intensify their investigations, track down these armed criminals, their sponsors, and bring them to justice. Itua emphasized that no individual, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law, and Edo State, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, will not tolerate any attempt to destabilize the peace and security of the people. Itua urged law enforcement agencies to move swiftly and ensure that all illegally possessed firearms are recovered, and those responsible for the current state of insecurity in Edo are held accountable. The security and well-being of Edo people remain Governor Okpebholo’s utmost priority, and he will not allow politically sponsored violence to take root in the State. Itua concluded that the State Government will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

PDP CRISIS DEEPENS AS DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS EXPULSION OF SENATOR SAMUEL ANYANWU

The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn as the National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) has recommended the expulsion of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, a loyalist of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. The recommendation was made in a letter signed by the Chairman of the NDC, Tom Ikimi, on March 10, 2025. According to the letter, the NDC found Anyanwu guilty of engaging in anti-party activities, contrary to the provisions of Article 58 (1)(f) of the PDP Constitution 2017. The committee also stated that Anyanwu was involved in conduct likely to disrupt the peaceful, lawful, and efficient conduct of the business of the party, contrary to the provisions of Article 58(1)(h) of the PDP Constitution 2017. The NDC’s recommendation has been met with resistance from Wike’s loyalists, with Anyanwu himself dismissing the recommendation, saying, “How can they expel me? That cannot stand. I have never heard from them. The last time they met, they adjourned to April 4. So wherever this one is coming from will not work.” The PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, also described the NDC’s action as “subjudice,” stating that the recommendation to expel Anyanwu would not be successful. Osadolor said, “I think what the Committee is doing is subjudice, and they should have allowed the court to make a pronouncement before addressing it.” Meanwhile, a reliable source has confirmed that the South-South Governors, barring any last-minute changes, will attend the inauguration of the zone’s caretaker committee scheduled for today. The source stated that their attendance is in support of the Damagum-led NWC and to take control of the party’s structure in the zone. The development is seen as a move to counter Wike’s influence in the region. Wike had earlier declared that the South-South is the PDP’s strongest base and that no further congress would be held in the region. However, the Damagum-led NWC disregarded Wike’s stance and appointed Emma Ogidi as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, announcing April 12 as the new date for the South-South Zonal Congress.

ANYANWU’S BID TO REVERSE REMOVAL AS PDP NATIONAL SECRETARY HITS THE ROCKS

The Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed by Samuel Anyanwu, seeking to stay the execution of the judgment of the Court of Appeal that removed him as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a dramatic turn of events, Anyanwu applied for withdrawal of the request, which was subsequently dismissed by Justice Musa Awani Aba-Aji. The Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in Enugu had earlier removed Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary in concurrent judgments. The Court of Appeal upheld Chief Sunday Ude-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary of the PDP, citing Anyanwu’s violation of the party’s constitution by contesting the governorship election in Imo State while laying claim to the national secretary position. Anyanwu had approached the Supreme Court in February, seeking to set aside the judgments of the lower courts and recognize him as the authentic National Secretary of the PDP. However, he surprisingly withdrew his application on Monday, prompting the Supreme Court to dismiss the request. The hearing in the substantive matter is ongoing before a five-man panel of justices headed by Justice Aba-Aji.

EDO PDP: A SICK PARTY ON LIFE SUPPORT, GASPING FOR RELEVANCE

The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been described as a party on life support, gasping for relevance. In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, noted that the party has become a shadow of its former self, factionalized, internally battered, and directionless. Itua stated that the PDP’s latest antics, rather than winning them public sympathy, only reinforce the obvious: Edo PDP is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), gasping for air, and rather than battling for survival, they are wasting their dwindling oxygen on unproductive tantrums. “The PDP is not just a sick party on life support—it is a party suffering from terminal political irrelevance,” Itua said. The PDP’s obsession with baseless accusations extends to their claim that the Okpebholo administration is “inducing” members of the Edo State House of Assembly with ₦200 million each to defect to the APC. Itua described this as a falsehood and a tragic reflection of PDP’s own corrupt mind-set. “In their time, they could only buy loyalty with cash because they lacked any real governance achievements to inspire followership,” he said. Itua also criticized the PDP’s fabricated outrage over recent security incidents in Ovia and Okpekpe. “While the Okpebholo administration swiftly mobilized security forces and initiated immediate responses to curb the threats, PDP shamelessly tried to spin the situation to cover up their own failures,” he said. The Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor noted that Governor Monday Okpebholo is not just leading a government; he is leading a rescue mission to recover Edo from the abyss PDP pushed it into. “Under PDP, Edo was seen as a State trapped in the hands of political Pharaohs, suffocating under bad governance. But Edo people have now declared they will never go back to Egypt,” Itua said. Fred Itua emphasized that the PDP should abandon its ICU-induced rants and start doing the hard work of genuine opposition—one that offers constructive alternatives rather than desperate, uncoordinated attacks. “Until then, their cries will remain what they are: the last gasps of a party in political coma, struggling to find its place in a State that has outgrown its failures,” he said. Itua concluded by saying that Governor Okpebholo welcomes criticism, but it should be based on facts and logic, not bitterness and political frustration. “The PDP’s rants are not about governance; they are about wounded egos and lost political privileges,” he said.

EDO APC ALERTS SECURITY AGENCIES, INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OVER PLANNED PDP PROTESTS IN ABUJA

The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised an alarm over an alleged plan by supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, to disrupt activities at the Attorney General’s Office in Abuja. Emperor Jarret Tenebe, the Edo APC Chairman, has called on security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Army, to be vigilant and take necessary measures to prevent the planned protest, which he described as an attempt to undermine the ongoing Edo State Governorship tribunal. Tenebe stated that the PDP and Ighodalo’s supporters intend to carry out the disruption on Tuesday, with the aim of influencing the tribunal’s proceedings. He emphasized that the APC will not tolerate any actions aimed at compromising the judicial process or disrupting public peace. “We urge the security agencies to be proactive and ensure that this unlawful act is prevented. Those behind this planned disruption must be held accountable for their actions,” Tenebe said. The development comes amid the ongoing legal battle at the Edo State Governorship tribunal, where the PDP and Ighodalo are challenging the outcome of the recent governorship election. The APC chairman also called on the international community to take note of the situation, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring a fair judicial process. Tenebe reiterated the APC’s commitment to peace and democracy, urging all parties involved to allow the tribunal to carry out its duties without interference. “We will not stand by and watch any group or individual attempt to disrupt the peace or manipulate the judicial process. The security agencies must act swiftly to prevent this planned protest,” he added. The APC chairman’s alert has heightened concerns over potential unrest in Abuja, as stakeholders await the response of security agencies to the alleged threat.
