TCN, Transport Ministry Partner to Power Kano Railway, Boost Rail Operations
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Transportation to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway operational facilities to the national grid as part of efforts to improve power supply for rail services.
The move followed a strategic stakeholders’ engagement held on July 7 at the TCN Kano Regional Headquarters, where participants mapped out plans for the proposed electricity connection.
According to TCN, the project is aimed at providing stable and reliable power to railway infrastructure under the Federal Ministry of Transportation to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.
Discussions at the meeting focused on the technical requirements for the grid connection, implementation timelines, operational coordination and the roles of participating agencies. Stakeholders also considered measures to ensure compliance with national grid standards, network safety and seamless integration into the transmission network.
The General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M.K. Bello, said sustained collaboration among stakeholders would be critical to the successful execution of the project.
He noted that early technical engagement would facilitate smooth implementation and ensure dependable electricity supply to the railway facilities.
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development objectives, expressing optimism that the initiative would strengthen rail operations and improve transport services.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project consultants Team Nigeria, and the project contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
